Anyone use this? Thoughts?
I recently set up a twin double stack with the stacking hardware available from the AeroGarden website. I haven’t started anything yet but I’ve had great luck using the smaller Bounty versions. Check out r/aerogarden and see what veggies and stuff people grow with it; lots of pictures.
It’s a dumb product and extremely overpriced for what it is. I grow hydroponically indoors and outdoors. Height doesn’t help the type of plants you would want to plant indoors. You would be better served with two much cheaper and smaller units given the type of plants most people would grow indoors.
If you want height, buy a stand alone light and hang it yourself.
No one is going to have 12 plants in this at once and keep them there long term.
I look at these more as a way to start seeds and then repot them later, so height doesn’t help with that, if anything it makes it harder.
Price wise, this price keeps going up and not down. This was $349 when Woot used to sell it. Now there is even more competition out there, there’s no reason to pay more now when no one was paying less before. It’s simply not a popular product. Smaller units are way better.

Here are the dangers of outdoor grows:
The only time I’ve ever had long term success with any aero garden is growing basil and parsley which I use all the time for cooking. You’re right as far as I’m concerned that there’s no way I need 12 plants worth of space or that much height. I love growing plants outdoors but for lots of reasons I just buy immature plants from a locally owned garden center and that works just fine for me.
Yes any type of weed will grow like a weed. I’ve grown a ton of different types of plants indoors. Everything grows in my opinion if given optimal light, dark, water and food. I’ve grown pumpkins, vines, everything.
I make my own plant food though.
Here is what a smaller unit looks like when it’s ignored for too long.

Here was my first attempt and failure at growing corn out of season:
That is an impressive damselfly!
I think one of the biggest things that leads to failure with the smaller aero gardens is lack of regular pruning. To keep the plants healthy and producing you’ve got to constantly cut them back. With my basil it got to be cutting it back three times a week. If you don’t the plants can’t sustain.
Yep and I don’t prune often enough or even close. That was a spare room of mine that I was working in daily so I just stuck them in there to forget about them.
I usually transport them before they get anywhere near this size but I am also easily distracted haha.
A Ghetto Grow 3000? Ha ha
It’s the sister to my Ghetto Air 3000
As you can see, I have too many hobbies lol.

The pictures of your plants and garden are just amazing!
I have wanted to build my own “ghetto grow” unit. But I’m the type that needs to have hands on training. I can put together IKEA things, because all the parts are there. But if I have to go get the parts. Nevermind. Lol
Thank you! It started off as a stress relief project. It’s slowly growing. :>
Youtube DIY for your fix then. Watching people do it may just be enough to satisfy you until you decide to tackle it yourself.
I suggest using 5 gallon buckets at first because it’s way easier to manage compared to a huge container like I did. I’ve learned a lot through my errors.
My Ghetto Grow 4000 is soon to be started. I’ve had 4’x50’ of mylar for about 3 years now that I’ve been meaning to use. So I plan on building my own tent out of mylar, PVC and reusable velcro. Can’t wait to see what mistakes I learn!
If I had a 3D printer, my poor wife would be over run by my projects; so there is a ban on 3D printers in this house. It’s a prison.
Everyone thas one seems to love it and reaps the homegrown bounty. With pot being legal in many places, surely you could trim off your weekly smoking habit. Cooks that grow lettuce and herbs get to use their fresh cuttings every week. Many simply use these growers to push seeds to sprout and grow quickly before planting them in the garden. Veggies & flowers.
I would think you’d want more height with that type of plant. It would probably work but I dunno how well. Generally those type of plants are at least 32 inches when they’re on the small side. Given the produce you want grows up, it’s probably going to have a tough life in this unit. Generally people who hydro grow those type of plants typically transport them more than once during it’s life. You’d typically prune the bottom half and promote as much height as possible for best results.
The smallest plant’s I’ve heard of being grown indoors would hit the maximum height on this before it flowers. Anyone growing anything of value wouldn’t like the height limitation on this. I don’t personally grow but I have many out of state friends who do.
You can google “seedsman” to find all the popular types of plants people grow indoors and they list their heights there too. Most of them would dwarf this product by feet. This maxes at 36" (91 centimeters) which I doubt it will even give you that.
Would be good seed starters and push healthy growth. Once the plants get bushy, you would either transplant them outside or put them in the 5 gallon deep water hydroponic setups sold at Home Depot and Lowes for about $130 for 4-5 bucket setups. Then suspend lights from the ceiling. Then you are off to the races.
I typically start my seeds in an aerogarden smaller unit, then transport it into a Ghetto Grow 3000. After it gets to a certain point I kick it outside.
I think this particular unit is super overkill for seeds, you could do the same thing with an empty bedroom drawer and a bowl of water.
Seeds don’t need nutrients or sun to grow. Most people just grow them in a bedroom drawer which is dark and warm. Having no light is best for seed stage. I paid around $50 for my elite aero gardens which I do love starting seeds in.
If I remember correctly “those” type of seeds are typically removed from darkness when a tap root shows. Then it typically gets planted. I believe the seed stage greatly affects the end products burn quality. Those growers are a unique type of people. I can’t pay attention to a plant that often for what they require, but one day I would love to grow one to experience the beauty of those plants. There are some serious beauty in the displays some of those plants put on during their life cycle.
edit: I stand corrected I paid $60 per unit rounded up.
I also bought these:
They are great units for getting passionate about plants.
The big leafy boys I will throw in cups next to the unit because they will steal all the light fast.
I wish i would of bought this yesterday with the prime 10% discount
