I really want to buy this - but is there anywhere that the filters are reasonably priced? I feel like a $30 filter for a $60 purchase might not be the way to go 
There are off-brand filters that are compatible. As an example, here’s a 2-pack for $24.99:
Search on Amazon (or elsewhere) for KJ217 filter and there are several for sale.
