I’ve had other speakers by Altec Lansing ans the sound quality is pretty good by my standards.
It would be nice to get the ipod with speakers. Saves time and money!

Does the volume get loud enough to use for outdoor functions, like a BBQ or something?

My car radio was stolen… and I have a bad wheel bearing, will this be loud enough to "silence the constant droning noise and will it work on 12vdc?

My dad got me a similar Altec Lansing model as a gift I’m happy with everything about it. It sees daily use and it has well outperformed my expectations. Travels great too. 
I have an older model…same features, but all black, and it sounds very good. Since I am not a home theater buff, I sometimes use it with a projector I have to watch movies. Battery lasts a long time.
