This says it works with Alexa. Will it also work with Google Home control?
“Compatibility Works with Alexa Only. Not compatible with other voice assistants like Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, Smart Things”
Yeah it looks like this one doesn’t. Honestly in my experience most of these lights work with both. The one I’ve had from Lenovo or smart things or so on all seem to work with both. But Amazon and Google have like a civil war when it comes to compatibility. You can’t use YouTube music as your default music player on an echo speaker for instance. Even though you can use Spotify or Apple music.
If you do research you can see just endless back and forth on these companies fighting over compatibility. It’s a case study in the need for universal standards.
These are very functional walk-around, dead-of-night lights, w/no stepping on any animals. Kinda like the “don’t blow out your dark adapted eyes” lights on submarines, etc.
Can these be used outdoors on the ceiling of a covered porch?
That’s the big downside to Amazon branded devices.
They are easy to set up and don’t require a third party app, but they only work with Alexa.
Not officially, but I’ve used Hue indoor only bulbs outside for years. As long as they don’t get wet or overheat in a small enclosed cover they should be fine.
And if one fails you are only out a few bucks.
Good thing I’ve never seen LED bulbs output much heat like the old incandescent ones did.
Those big ol’ heat sinks? I guarantee they are there for a functional reason, not for aesthic purposes.
Some LED bulbs are designed to vent their heat out vertically through the globe, and if they’re mounted upside-down in a ceiling socket it can cause premature failures. The heat has nowhere to go, so the components on the circuit board slowly cook. If the bulb has a visible heatsink, it will fare better in a ceiling socket.
These work quite well in old-fashioned goose-neck lamps, sitting sideways so heat doesn’t rise through the electronics…
