Not this one. Doesn’t get many updates.
Get the Fire 10, 9th generation which updates and works great. Mail, surf, videos, etc.
I have this one. I installed Google Play on it right after I bought it everything worked well except the version of Android that this runs on so old now that I can’t get the latest versions of Chrome anymore. Google discontinued support for older OS versions…no updates to Chrome since last year. I can use the browser that’s included or download a third party one but the whole OS not being updated is kind of a security concern. I don’t feel good about using it for anything where I would have to input my credentials. I basically use it for streaming free sites and it sits on my kitchen table. Works great for that.
Break out and get the 9th generation. It is so much better. The price is great!
Thanks, I might do that. Or get the new 2023 Fire 10. I just checked and it’s $90 on the mother ship right now. Crazy low prices.
I bought the 2023 also, I don’t see much of an upgrade.
It’s what’s under the hood that I’m looking at.
These are the Android version numbers, the Fire OS numbers are different.
Per Amazon:
2017 Fire 10 - based on Android 5.1
2019 Fire 10 - based on Android 9.0
2023 Fire 10 - based on Android 11
As it is, the current version of Android is 14 and was released by Google on Oct 4, 2023 so Fire tablets are always going to be somewhat behind. I go into it knowing that and accepting it because my uses of the device don’t need a high level of security.
I guess each person has to make these decision on their own. If I can get a tablet for $50 more that has Android 11 instead of 9, it is something to consider.
Edit: for typos only.
If you want a 10" tablet for your kid (I prefer 8"), the $25 version of this is great because you won’t care if it breaks. If you want a tablet for yourself but think you won’t use it much (like the occasional plane trip), the $25 version of this will do what you need it to with a great resolution for the price. But as other commenters have pointed out, you are tied to what’s in the amazon app store because you will be disappointed if you install Google play and try to use the same apps you use on your phone on this. Last I checked, all the most common streaming apps that are in the Amazon app store still work on this.
