Amazon Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen - 2022)

Amazon Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen - 2022)

I have owned two of these Amazon Fire TV cubes (and a lot of the Firesticks, probably more than 10). I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER FIRE CUBE. The first Fire Cube was very glitchy, when it worked it was great but often we had to set it up again. This first Fire Cube was at an our vacation house, so we just lived with it. All of our many FireSticks generally worked well so I thought I just got a bad unit with the first Fire Cube. In December I replaced the FireStick with a new version of the latest Fire Cube and the thing is glitchy as hell, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. I know that I should throw it away but I paid $130 for it and I’m outside of the return window. Bottom line: get a FireStick.

Dang, that sucks to hear. We have fire sticks on all our TVs at home… and over the years, I’ve had at least one from every generation. One of my older ones is in the electronics travel kit that we take with us to hotels/nightly rentals so we don’t have to log into apps on TVs and forget to log out.

Some time back I swapped the 4K on our main TV for a refurb 2nd gen Cube I bought here (mostly for the upgraded storage… those Jackbox games are HUGE) and I’ve been super happy with that one. It rarely acts up or does anything weird.

The only problem I’ve ever had with it is that occasionally (a couple times a month at most) the sound gets a little out-of-sync and I have to go into the settings and switch the audio mode to something different, then back and it works again. I don’t know if that’s my Cube though, since I have the audio routed a little abnormally… HDMI from the Cube to the TV, then out of the TV via Toslink to my TV mount that has built in speakers.

Edit: Now that I think about it… it may be my TV since it seems like it only started happening when we swapped out our old one for the one we have now. The old one was a nicer Samsung, and the new one is a cheaper (I think Onn brand maybe?). So it could be related to this TVs settings.

I recently updated my firestick 4k to this and i was kind if surprised to have almost no problems. My 4k was starting to lag with updating the menu screens - assumed it was due to amazons really great /s menu updates recently.

Only thing i learned was that it doesnt support the echo wall clock. Thats insanely odd as i was trying to replace an echo gen1 and the firestick with this unit.

Very happy with it so far and got it with the in app prime discount.

Mostly use it with plex, netflix, and prime video. i prefer the older remote with no special marketing one touch buttons. Not really worried about the latest audio codecs support as i’m using this on surround sound bar for now

I love my cube from the generation before this one. It’s pretty much flawless. Even though I haven’t noticed any slowdowns, I like having newer tech. So I almost upgraded to this generation when woot ran a discount on Amazon devices about a month ago. But first I did a little research on reddit and found some people that lost soundbar control going from one generation to the next. Since my soundbar is so old, I don’t want to risk it. I won’t be upgrading until my previous gen cube stops working.

I originally lost sound bar once upgraded. I ended up hooking the sound bar differently I believe to either the cable box or tv. However, I could see how such could be a problem for most since they may not have that connection availability. Big negative originally for us during upgrading and after several calls to tech support by bypassing the cube all together I finally got the soundbar working. Why did Amazon find the need to change its current connection configuration? Such a change is usually for the better however losing connectivity also causes users to look elsewhere for a product which would be more suitable for their needs.
