This one has cellular though which bumps up the price quite a bit.

Woot used to have some great deals. Now it’s just a way for Amazon to unload refurbs for 5% off.

Here is a good link for comparison. You save $30 over buying from Apple. So then the question is if the $30 is worth the 1 year warranty vs 90 day.

Or is the $100 worth getting a 2 year newer chip and new. Otherwise the 7th vs 8th gen are pretty similar. It added pencil support and a keyboard connector as well.

Damn, shoulda bought a pallet of 7th gen iPads when the street price was $250-275, brand new, not refurbs.

We own an earlier iPad with cellular and I think we used the cellular function 2-3 times as a novelty.

That 1-year Apple warranty, even tho you won’t likely need it, is certainly a lot nicer than 90-days. And with a new one you’ll also have a brand new battery.

Who, other than companies, uses cellular iPads when a regular iPad can be so easily tethered to your smart phone? (Edit: note, even if you have a cellular iPad, it can also be tethered to your smart phone.)

Yep, personal here, I currently pay an extra $10 per month to have my iPad on Verizon, and I use it maybe once a year. I could EASILY tether it to my phone… Come to think of it, I’m cancelling my tablet service. Thanks for the push fellow wooter.

There’s another market that you’re possibly not aware of/not a part of. I know people who bought LTE tablets for their older relatives who have difficulty with wifi whether thats:

  1. Not understanding that wifi only works at home (or places where they’ve connected, but that’s a bridge too far for people who don’t understand that wifi only works at home.)
  2. Not able to understand, much less execute, tethering their tablet to their phone.

LTE on a tablet means that it just works no matter where they are, and drastically cut down on their tech support phone calls.

PS. Tethering your tablet to your phone works great in a pinch, but it’s not something you want to do all the time. Enabling a hotspot on your phone eats up your phone’s batteries, and some cellular plans distinguish between hotspot and regular use whether that’s throttling your hotspot speeds or imposing a lower data limit cap on hotspot use or both.

Well FWIW, I just purchased this from Woot on the last sale and they claimed it was cellular, and even in the description, but what I received was wifi only. Currently arguing with customer service about it. Woot just takes the stand, whenever they mess up they just want you to return it. No compromise for their mistakes and of course you can take it or leave. I thoroughly enjoy not getting what they described in the mail and then returning it, so my money is tied up for weeks, when they could say we’re sorry and offer some sort of compensation for their mistakes and make a bad customer experience into an acceptable one, but not Woot. I should have bought new.
UPDATE: We made it ! The sale is over and I am not feeling the love? It seems we have either sucum to the new stricter policies or we have the newbies in the show me state. Sorry just fed up! I went ahead and oiled the old hinges on my wallet and bought new. The crazy thing is I feel better now that I did, because Apple has some really respectable prices on let’s just say the best product for the money @ this time. The new 12 chip and warranty made me smile. If any of you are on the fence? There are plenty of people everywhere dumping the last 2019 models as quickly as possible to get their hands on probably the best upgrade for the money Apple has offered in years! FWIW

You are 100% right. Woot used to be the best. Amazon ruined it’s creativity and it’s plethora of cool deals. Now it is just the same old crap. Prices keep getting worse.

Small clarification: the 6th generation iPad (still 9.7") was the first with support for the Apple Pencil.

The price difference for cellular is $130 new ($459), so this isn’t a bad deal IF you need cellular.

Otherwise the new version at $300 or less is a better deal.

The only compelling reason to get the cellular model is for the built in GPS chip. Like if you plan to load it with offline maps and use it for navigating areas with weak cellular coverage. It’s a shame Apple doesn’t include GPS in the wifi models.
