Apple AirTag (4pk)

Apple AirTag (4pk)

If you look on Amazon you will find all kinds of accessories to incorporate AirTag into all kinds of things. Remotes, bicycles, etc… My car has a big plastic box with sensors behind the rear view mirror. I just dropped an AirTag in there. Now I can find my car if I lose it in a big parking lot. If it gets stolen I will be able to easily see where it is.

What an absolute ripoff. I mean people will buy it because it says Apple, but you can buy basically the same things for $54 cheaper, less than half the price.

It’s not the same tracking technology.

There’s always a market.

Tiles are only good up to 250 ft for location

Great for tracking your wife’s movements.

Tiles without a service plan can only be found within Bluetooth range.

AirTags do not require additional service plans for extended range tracking. As far as I know there are no service plans for AirTags.

Both require the generosity of other smartphone users to allow reporting of nearby tiles/tags, so both have similar limits on how well they can be located.

Edit - Even with service plan, Tiles can only be reported by other Tile owners who have the app. AirTag reporting is built into every iOS device. Tile should have partnered with Google to have their product baked into Android.

Edit2 - Sorry for all the edits. I just bought some recently and am just learning about them. I had looked at Tiles years ago and found them to be quite limited. Looked again before buying the AirTags and the service plan for extended locating was a non-starter.

Recent iOS updates have included a feature which tells you if unregistered AirTags are “following” you.

Supposedly an Android app to do something similar is “coming soon”.

Edit - The AirTags themselves are being updated to start beeping when they are moving and have been out of the range of registered phones for more than 8-24 hours. Originally was more than 72 hours. So need to make sure they are concealed in something sound proof. Or remove the speaker magnet which I just read is a thing.

More edit -

Detects she will be leaving?

So if I dont have an iphone and there is no one with one close (we live in the middle of nowhere) these prolly arent the best idea?

Correct. An iPhone or iPad is required to setup AirTags. If you have neither, that alone is a total do-not-buy.

The Android app has been released, “Tracker Detect”. No where near the quality I would expect from Apple. It’s a bare minimum Bluetooth scanner. Hoping it improves quickly, but not holding my breath.
