Apple Mac mini 32GB 128GB (2018)
Google AI Overview
Are the RAM and SSD user modifiable?
The 2018 Mac Mini with the Intel i7 processor does not allow for an internal SSD upgrade. The SSD is soldered onto the logic board, making it a non-user-removable component. Users can, however, add external SSDs for increased storage capacity using the Thunderbolt 3 or USB 3 ports.
The RAM in the 2018 Mac mini can be upgraded, but it’s not user-friendly and requires disassembling the machine. The RAM is not soldered and is accessible by removing the logic board, which is secured by screws and clips. It uses standard SO-DIMM DDR4 memory modules. You can upgrade it yourself with proper tools and guidance or have it done by an authorized service provider.
Is this new or refurbished?
New
NOTE: AFAIK the Intel-based Macs will get macOS 26 “Tahoe,” but thereafter only security updates. You might want to stay on macOS 15 “Sequoia” in case the new glass UI and Apple Intelligence needs more power than this CPU can offer. Caveat emptor.
(32 GB RAM is plenty, should run Sequoia and multiple open apps like a champ. But I have no hands-on experience.)
Wait, so, the RAM is actually upgradeable here, but the SSD is not? Why would anyone solder SSD in a desktop device that’s this big?
Soldering RAM at least gives you higher performance because of LPDDR4 instead of DDR4 for the laptops, but soldering SSD is simply wasteful in every possible way.
Honestly, Apple is so backwards!
Specs:
Per the former, the CPU is probably the latter:

It does seem like RAM is most definitely a SO-DIMM, upgradeable to 64GB, SSD probably soldered, indeed, sadly, and at 128GB, it’s probably an EDU model?
Very strange to come with 32GB RAM but only 128GB ROM. That’s 4x the standard RAM yet only half the minimum storage.
At the time these were sold, 128gb was the base storage.
Look these are a great machine to toss boot camp on and run a cheap and reliable mini server. I use one for my Blue Iris security system and another for my NextCloud Server.
The problem with this one is the 128gb cripple hammer of storage. You are going to want to sit this one out whether you use it for MacOS or a windows machine because you can’t increase the storage.
Now if you can snatch a 256gb model which woot sometimes offers that’s a good deal and if you need more memory it’s honestly not that hard to do and it’s cheap because the DIMMS are cheap. I got 64GB in both of mine.
Sadly, most of the units currently available online that I have found appear to be of the 128GB SSD variety.
That’s what I am finding from a cursory search of the current online offerings.
Of course you CAN Increase storage - externally via thunderbolt 3 … VERY FAST storage too! Plenty of ports in the back also probably won’t need an external hub.
Anyone got one of these? Is it really new?
Soldered 128GB storage sucks, but the deal is kinda nice, although not sure why I’d need this, especially with support ending so soon now.
Ugh, this would have at least been OK if it was the 256GB SSD, but 128GB for today? Yuck not worth it since all of Apple’s latest stuff is not upgradeable - why, Apple, why???
Later the base was 256GB with 512 Gb, 1TB and 2TB versions also available.
