Apple TV 4K

Why the remote is after market??

That’s an awful lot of angry boilerplate trying to head off somebody taking advantage of a $10 discount.

1st gen 4k remote? (Non-Siri remote)

That “caution” would also be a nice way to stir up interest “this deal must really be hot!” since there’s no way Woot or Amazon could tell if you subsequently turned around and resold it. And they’ve got better things to do than chase $10.

NOTE!!!, commercial use of Woot and Amazon Services, including the transfer of a Prime discount to a third party, is not allowed by the Amazon and Woot! Terms and Conditions of Use. If you purchase this product for the purpose of immediate resale at the Prime discount price, your order may be cancelled and refunded.

Hey rocketships and yachts to big to pass beneath bridges aren’t cheap. Stop trying to pass along benefits and depriving a divorced old man of his sawbuck!

“The previous model” is going on 3 years old and the biggest complaint was the remote. Too much swiping.

The AppleTV can “learn” any old infrared “real button” remote. The AppleTV itself learns the signals from the remote and requires no reprogramming of the remote itself.

I have the “previous” previous model (from 2015, now called the AppleTV HD) and it is still going strong and still receiving updates. It came with the “horrible” swiper remote, but I have long since “taught” the AppleTV to use a universal remote that was originally setup for a Comcast set top box.

Good to know that this looks like the older 1st Gen box and not the newer 2nd Gen box.

This is the 4th gen and later box.

Edit - OK, I get what you mean. This is the 1st version of the “Apple TV 4K” and they continued to use the same box for the 2nd version of the Apple TV 4K (with pushbutton remote). Although technically speaking this would be the 2nd model that used the 4th gen box.

1st gen is the white box on the bottom.

2nd/3rd gen is the short black box on the left, 4th and later the taller one on the right.

The message in Tom’s Guide is just buy the new remote to receive much of the benefit of the new Gen box. Sounds like sound advice if the bottom line price also is beneficial.

In any event how does this compare to the Amazon Fire Cube ?

Been tempted by an Apple TV box. I have an older one a friend gave us but it appears bricked.

Anecdotally I hear the user interface is smoother than either ROKU or FireTV and with less clutter.

However, if the AppleTV apps for ROKU and FireTV offer a hint, I’m not a fan. Seems hard to find content, and it wants to focus on an episode when you want to hit the series “about” screen.

ROKU seems fairly stable but is sometimes glitchy and even with MicroSD cards on current gen HW, sometimes slow.

I used to like FireTV but, honestly, it seems to be getting less and less reliable. Either outright rebooting or when starting a new session, it gets caught between the audio of a prior session and the video of the current session. Especially on its YouTube app.

Current AppleTV box users - is it rock solid reliable?

yes I have this model and it’s very reliable, the two issues I have are the remote and sometimes it doesn’t want to wake up with any button press, but if I hit the menu button it always wakes up.

I have 3 of these models across my home and they all work beautifully. Just purchased another one today. IMO these are the best streaming player in the market today.

Guess I missed this deal. Just curious, how much were they?

$109

$10 discount on one if buyer has prime.

Yes, sorry. This looks like the 1st Gen AppleTV 4k and not the 2nd Gen AppleTV 4k.

Not the 2nd Gen AppleTV overall in the series.
