$250 for an i-3? Pass…
I disagree with the pass choice. This is a perfect machine for 80% of users looking for a portable, lightweight, extremely capable modern lappy. The backlit keyboard, solid state storage, WIN 11 upgradeable, convertible FHD display for this price is spot on. The ability to upgrade the ram and storage, if needed, is a HUGE plus.
Dude its 1 lb.
Years of product differentiation and marketing has folks thinking that an i3 automatically means it’s slow – never mind that this “low-end” 8th gen i3 performs better than the prior generation’s i7.
(Note that I am not staff. I just volunteer to help out on the forums.)
I was hot-to-trot, but wanted port info. Google is our friend:
- 1.5kg or 3.3lbs for Luddites
- no LAN (killer)
- Ports and connectivity
- 1x USB Type-C, 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps)
- 1x USB Type-A, 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps)
- 2x USB Type-A, 2.0 (take the bad with the good)
You’re welcome
This is a great deal, IMO. According to the official specs (ASUS Vivobook Flip 14 TP412 - Tech Specs|Laptops For Home|ASUS USA), there should be an open memory slot and the laptop supports up to 12 GB. Given that you can buy a 4 GB DDR4 DIMM for less than $20, that means you can have a sub-$300 laptop with a 1080p touchscreen display, 4 USB ports (3 type-A, 1 type-C), and a real SSD instead of the cheap eMMC storage (or mechanical drives) that most laptops in this price range have. It’s no speed demon, and it doesn’t have a ton of storage, but this will be enough laptop for most people, especially after a small RAM upgrade. As ojaudet notes above, though, there’s also no ethernet/LAN port, so that may be a dealbreaker for some.
I own three of these exact machines, bought new in 2020 (used for a year+ of virtual learning during 2020-2021).
They’re pretty solid - the lack of a LAN port is a $10 USB fix (for a very infrequent need if this is being toted around).
The RAM upgrade was straightforward, though tedious.
One thing to note - the webcam is located at the bottom of the screen, which makes for a slightly unusual angle/picture. Definitely an odd design choice.
My only wish is that they had USB-C power rather than the small barrel connector.
Happy to answer any questions.
