Best Joni Mitchell album?
What is this, Canada?
Woot! Is this going to be in the next BOC?
That’s a lot of first names
To be honest, my favorite album is probably “The Hissing of Summer Lawns,” but it’s not really easy to choose.
I find Joni, at her best, to be an astonishing lyricist:
The Jungle LIne
“Through I-bars and girders, through wires and pipes
The mathematic circuits of the modern nights
Through huts, through Harlem, through jails and gospel pews
Through the class on Park and the trash on Vine
Through Europe and the deep deep heart of Dixie blue
Through savage progress cuts the jungle line.”
The Hissing of Summer Lawns
“He put up a barbed wire fence
To keep out the unknown
And on every metal thorn
Just a little blood of his own
She patrols that fence of his
To a latin drum
And the hissing of summer lawns”
Then again, I can’t forget her other albums, like Hejira.
Hejira
“White flags of winter chimneys
Wave truce against the moon
In the mirrors of a modern bank
From the window of a hotel room”
Or Refuge of the Roads
“In a highway service station
Over the month of June
Was a photograph of the earth
Taken coming back from the moon
And you couldn’t see a city
On that marbled bowling ball
Or a forest or a highway
Or me here least of all
You couldn’t see these cold water restrooms
Or this baggage overload
Westbound and rolling taking refuge in the roads”
But Hissing of Summer Lawns is not the only one of Joni’s albums I could easily call my favorite. I’ve listened to so many of her songs, and I’m not sure I really have a favorite album anymore.
At various times I could say that “Barangrill” from For the Roses, or “Amelia” from Hejira, or “Just Like This Train” from Court and Spark, or “Judgement Of The Moon And Stars” from Blue, or “Slouching Toward Bethlehem” from Night Ride Home was a favorite song. So how can I choose an album?
Yes, I like Joni Mitchell. Yes, I could keep going. I think I should probably stop.
Who is Joni Mitchell?
I think this song stuff is just a joke. I am pretty sure she is the creator of the Paul Mitchell hair care line. She created the pseudonym because she didnt want people to be mad at her for the ridiculously high prices she charged for hair care products at salons.
Danny’s Song is her best album, though the one with “Snowbird”, This Way Is My Way, is probably better known…
Put this in the who cares file.
Both Sides Now
I voted Hejira because it’s easily her best. Mingus is a close second.
Joni Mitchell really had a great voice.
Joni is also an amazing songwriter, many of her songs covered by other bands…
Listened to a few songs from her before posting and her music is just not for me. Read an article about her and James Taylor and never knew he had such a drug problem. Always loved his music and he never struck me as an addict.
I respect the hell out of Joni Mitchell, but Big Yellow Taxi is one of the worst songs ever recorded. I mean bottom 5 of all time.
They played Big Yellow Taxi on the radio every hour back in '70.
The “Pave paradise & put up a parking lot” line has carried on for decades and was almost a mantra for a generation…
Although I’m not typically a fan of live albums, Miles of Aisles is my favorite. The mutual love and respect between the audience and an artist who truly enjoys what she does comes through as clearly as her magical voice.
