BetterWoot: Search, Sort & Filter for Woot! (Chrome extension)

Although Woot! is awesome, its search/sort/filter options are quite limited, so I made a free Chrome extension that puts all of this on the page for you.

The bar under the header searches every current deal, about 10,000 of them, refreshed every 20 minutes. Matches drop down with prices and discounts as you type.

You can then press Enter for the full list on BetterWoot Search. You can narrow by category, price, discount, words, and condition, and sort by price, discount, or what ends soonest. That page works without the extension, and a search can be shared by link.

On All Deals, the category lists, and event pages, a bar above the deals sorts and filters what you’re looking at. Hide sold-out deals, set a minimum discount or a maximum price, choose new, open box, refurbished, or used, and hide names that contain words you don’t want. It remembers your sort and filters. On the long lists, Woot! loads 12 deals a page, so the filters cover that page. Search is what covers the whole site.

In the extension options, you can hide the poll at the bottom of the home page, and there’s an optional dark mode, including one that follows your system. Search runs on your computer. The extension downloads a public deal list from betterwoot.com and doesn’t send what you type or click. No account, no ads, no tracking.

Let me know what you think, or if you have any ideas on how I can improve the extension!

when add price filter item list gone when refresh items back next refresh still gone

I hope I explained the problem clearly.

Sometimes zooming out brings it back, too.

Hey, thanks for checking it out!

I’m trying to reproduce your issue. When I apply a maximum price filter and refresh, I get the expected results. One thing I am seeing, though, is that it isn’t correctly repopulating the current page and filling them out with the maximum number of items after it applies the filter. Is this what you’re referring to? I will fix this in the very next release.

I will also hide BetterWoot’s sorting field on these specific page types, as this one of the page types that Woot! actually does allow sorting on.

Edit: I see now, you’re talking about the view being reduced to two columns. I’ll fix all of this tonight. Thank you again for the report!

1.3.2 has been submitted to the Chrome Web Store, addressing all of the issues found based on this report. I’ll let you know once it’s approved. Things are much smoother now.

1.3.2 is now live with the fixes:

  • Applying filters on a deal list takes about half a second instead of two and a half. BetterWoot no longer waits on Woot!’s Sort menu while the list loads again.
  • While a list loads after Apply, Woot!’s sidebar is disabled along with its Sort control, so nothing can be clicked mid-load.
  • While BetterWoot reads a list, Woot!’s “No deals” count is hidden. The count reads “Loading…” until the deals appear, and the read’s percentage is a small green figure that doesn’t shift the text.
  • A first visit to All Deals now ends filtered on every page more often. When the read is done but the deals are still on their way, BetterWoot waits a little longer before falling back to filtering page by page.

@SP0IL, if you update your extension, all of your issues should be fixed. Thanks again for the feedback.

Found the issue, it’s related to having a saved filter set that contains a minimum-off amount. Fixing that in the next release. Thanks again!

1.3.3 is out now with several fixes.

  • The first visit to a big deal list, like All Deals, no longer flashes the list filtered page by page with “Couldn’t filter every page in time.” The list stays covered, with the read’s progress in the count, until it can be shown filtered on every page. It falls back to page by page, with the note, only when that can’t finish.
  • “Filter every page” and Apply now really filter every page after a list missed its deadline, instead of coming back page by page with the same note.
  • Filter changes made in the toolbar popup now look the same as Apply on the page: the list dims and the count reads “Loading…” right away, and the new list arrives in under a second. Before, the old list showed with the new filters (“12 on this page”) and then reloaded seconds later.
  • The popup now holds your defaults: every page opens with its sort and filters. Filters set in the bar on a page, and a sort picked in Woot!'s Sort menu, apply to that tab only. They stay as you move between lists, turn pages, or open a deal and come back, and a new tab starts from your defaults. Changing a default in the popup, sort included, updates open tabs.
  • Save as default in the bar makes the page’s sort and filters your defaults, without opening the popup.
  • Clear filters shows whenever a filter is on, not only when nothing matches. On a page it shows every deal and leaves your defaults alone; in the popup it clears the defaults.
  • While a list is read, the count goes from “Filtering all deals…” to “Filtering all 9,579 deals… 40%” and stays at 100% until the filtered list appears, instead of going back to “Loading…” at the end.
  • Going back to a deal list from a deal no longer adds “The page keeping the extension port is moved into back/forward cache” to the extension’s Errors page.
