Except for a few models, Bose generally is way overrated. they are like Absolut vodka; do a blind comparison and you see right through the hype.
agreed, but i definitely understand the desire to have a whole system if don’t have one yet and aren’t quite that into audio. for some of us, it takes time to progress into wanting better sound enough to start paying for it and piecing it together. not to mention educating yourself about it (which can be pretty overwhelming) and doing it yourself (which can be pretty frustrating). cashflow is lean for me, so i don’t own anything high-end, but i have an audiophile friend who outfits my boyfriend with speakers (until he wants them back), and he has a couple of big BA’s that are pretty incredible. i would think at least some of that quality would translate across their lines and make this a great buy for someone wanting to move beyond a $300 boxed system without breaking the bank.
Pulled the trigger on this one. I got tired of the lousy center channel i have and this should make a big difference.
Anyone know were to find a decent subwoofer for a medium sized room for around $150-250 new or used? Yes i know that budget limits it, but any models I should look for maybe?
lifetime warranty!
I don’t think you are going to get a stellar system by piecing together a bunch of speakers of this price and quality…do you?
not a bose…
Woohoo! First woot!
Boston Acoustics are great “BANG FOR THE BUCK” Speakers. While they aren’t on the level of speakers like Martin Logans, which some else mentioned, they definitely hold their own. Martin Logans, start at about 2K, btw.
IDEALLY, home theaters should have the same speakers all the way around, but practical reality makes that difficult (I know about diffuse surrounds, just don’t want to confuse everybody). The center channel speaker ideally should be placed vertically just like the lefts and rights, but because the video screen typically gets in the way, speaker manufacturers usually design a special speaker just for the center. Center channel speakers typically have a more diffuse sound distribution and the sound axis is usually oriented so it sounds correct when placed horizontally. For the person asking if you could buy two of these for stereo, the answer is yes, but you would probably want to place them horizontally, and you will do better with dedicated bookshelves like the CR67 which will image better.
It’s strange that woot would offer just a center by itself. I would recommend this product if you have the Boston CR series and don’t have a center, or if you are planning to buy CR speakers in the future. Although I personally wouldn’t recommend it for people who have other types of speakers, if you’re not that picky, it will do fine. That being said, I actually wooted one because I happen to have Boston CR series speakers and could actually use a center so it worked out perfectly for me!
BTW, I know Bose as:
Box Only, Sound Extra,
but I really like
Buy Other Stereo Equipment! lol
If i hit mega millions yesterday, do you really think i’d be checking woot right now? seriously? Hah. You’re right. I probably would, actually. Pathetic. Or is it awesome? You decide.
That looks like a CR2, not a CRC.
I think you meant, “No highs, No lows, Must be Bose.”
Much more effective when it rhymes.
BTW, I hope this is in
BLACK?
I know it’s available in other colors.
Just wanted to chime in that I have used Boston Acoustics speakers for years and have always thought they offered a superb value. They sound great and they’re well-constructed.
I started with a pair of CR8 bookshelf speakers about 10 years ago, which I still have although I’m not using them (they’re too large to use as rears in my living room). I liked them so much that I later moved on to a set of VR950 towers with a VR910 center, finally adding CR57 rears and an M&K 12" subwoofer, which is still my current setup.
BA is pretty well-respected on audio forums although some people find their sound a bit on the “bright” side, but I’ve always thought they strike a nice balance for use with both HT and music. The CR (compact reference) series, of which this Woot is a part, gets rave reviews from some owners for the price/performance ratio. Here is an uber-detailed review/comparison (with pics) of one of the bookshelf models in the series.
Even if we had known it was sarcasm, we still wouldn’t have thought it was funny
Awesome. I was looking to buy this exact speaker in the next few weeks. Best price I found online was $135. My 1st Woot purchase!
Rasjad
So, if my receiver only outputs 6 ohms (Prepackaged Sony HTIB):
a) am I ok to use this speaker?
b) Am I better off getting a new reciever?
We have a velodyne VRP-1200 in our home; that one runs about 350, but there is a 10" that runs about 250. That one seems to work very well for our smaller sized home. It’s not the best velodyne has, but it’s a decent price.
I have new Onkyo 7.1 channel receiver and this Infiniti 5.1 channel speaker package. Can someone please tell me if this BA center channel would be a significant improvement over the center channel that came with my Infiniti package? The room this system is in is about 12x14.
Thanks.
I’ll stick with my B&W soundsystem, Boston can’t hold a candle to Bowers & Wilkins. It looks like a good deal if you’re not stupid like me and spent 500 bucks on your centre channel. Also, buying 2 of them would give you a pretty decent 2 channel setup.
This speaker would be a huge improvement.
