Breville Café Modena Espresso Machine

I think I must have gotten mine at the same time you did. The machine has worked flawlessly since day one and I have recommended it to friends.

When reading Amazon reviews, do so with the knowledge that many people are incapable/unwilling of seeing what the real cause of an issue is. There were a lot of negative reviews on the Cafe Roma because people could not get good flow from the machine. This will happen with just about any machine if you get too fine a grind on your beans.

Nice post - I’ll even overlook the misspelling of your name…

I imagine there are also a lot of folks who are comparing this to much more expensive models. Not long ago, if you told me there was a place where I could buy an espresso machine for $60, I would have replied “do they sell bridges for that price too?”

I have owned my Breville - same model, since 2008. The only problem I had with it was the filter, a plastic piece that broke under pressure - it can be replaced with a piece like this: Vancouver Wire EDM -- Breville Parts
It worked like a charm and I haven’t had a problem since. I’m pretty sure that replacing with an original plastic part would result in the same problem.

Also, since it’s refurbished, the first thing you should do is clean with a decalcifying agent and water. It’s a great buy!

Mine did the same - also after about 3 moths of use… I replaced the part with an alluminum part (available here: Vancouver Wire EDM -- Breville Parts) and I haven’t had any problems since. It’s worth the money & a great machine once the plastic is replaced with an aluminum filter.

I enjoy the product images where Woot clearly just took the stuff out of the box and put things together in what seemed like a logical way even though it is all wrong.

The large metal cup is for milk, and just milk right? and the frothing wand has the rubber steam baffle bit shoved all the way up to the top instead of extending down into the frothing cup.

I think it is a worthwhile purchase, I think this was the same price I spent on a cheap espresso machine at a brick and mortar big box store years ago, it was mostly plastic exterior and cheaply made, this at least looks like it could weather some use.

yes! I have been wanting to buy an espresso machine for so long. last time there was one on woot I hesitated and missed it and regretted it. Won’t make that mistake this time! I just hope that it is well-refurbished and comes soon so I can start making lattes…

Is it better to use finely ground coffee or those pod things? And if ground is it better to grind the beans yourself or does it not make a difference from pre-ground coffee?

They are owned by amazon. Amazon will never leave Seattle.

Had this model for 2 years now - bought off woot for $70. Makes great espresso. Getting a bur grinder is a must and it will take some experimentation with heat and timing to get the perfect pull. But once you got it down this thing works like a champ at a price you can’t touch. Some times the plastic tank leaks a little water where it meets the seal on the bottom - just don’t leave it filled unless you are going to run it.

Did I miss something in the description? I didnt get the espresso cup/saucers.
Also, I just made a latte, tastes great, but the pump made a bad noise when I ran it to froth the milk…sorta (wump wump wump)sounding…thoughts?

Here’s what was supposed to be in the box:

In the box:

* Breville Cafe Modena Espresso Machine, Model #ESP6SXL
* Porcelain Espresso Cup and Saucer Set
* Stainless Steel Frothing Pitcher
* Tamping Tool / Measuring Spoon

If you are missing something, contact service@woot.com for assistance. They’ll be back in the office on Monday.

My frother also made the wump wump noise. strange you didn’t get the cups and saucers though, mine were there. Kinda wondering where to find some more on the cheap, figured the simple plain would be cheaper.

As I suspected too, what was in the box was the XXESP6SXL. XX is the re manufactured prefix used by Breville it would seem. It was also the most prevalent version of this product on the inter-webs.

Did anyone know of any recalls, or other fa****ilure points (besides the “carafe seating” mentioned by AlisonSusanne)

Know of any returns for pump fa****ilure, the #7 plastic water reservoir, incompetent baristas?

and

Can anyone else can confirm or deny that their machine also sounds like a motel bed after its been fed a quarter when steaming milk? if there are some out there that don’t I think mine and paytonsglove’s might be broken.

I got my Package today, I Didn’t get the saucers and cups. Anyone else have this problem? Were they included?

Ditto. Included in the “in the box” description. Contacting service@woot now.

Anyone been able to get anywhere with the missing items?
Woot told me to talk to Breville, they told me to pay them 8 bucks per cup and 4 per plate or something like that. So far, I haven’t heard anything form woot again after I forwarded that email to them.

I just received my “refurbished” Breville Cafe Modena. There was a crack in the plastic top, the booklets that accompanied it were trashed, and there were coffee splotches on the front of the machine. I’m not using it until I get an answer from Woot to whether the crack makes it unsafe to use. But, I’m a bit disappointed that the machine looks worse than well-used.

My machine also had cosmetic damage as well. Nothing was cracked, but it was more than well-used as well.

We have been receiving complaints about no cup + saucer. We’ve confirmed with Breville that there has been a mistake and they’re going to be able to fix it by sending them out (we don’t have any in stock, sadly). You can call them at this number to request replacement: 1-866-273-8455. If you have any issues, please email in and we’ll straighten things out.
