I tried one of these a few years ago. The milk tasted like a rubber hose. I ended up returning it.

I bought one of these in a previous deal and love it and use it regularly. You do need to experiment a bit to get it how you like it, with the right ratio of nuts / process. For me, I’ve settled on 1.5 to 2 tablespoons of almonds with 3 or 4 cashews to make it creamier, with a little bit of agave and vanilla for flavor. I do add cheesecloth straining step afterwards which makes it less grainy and more like storebought milk.

The math you did doesn’t seem right. I think the recipe book calls for only ~1 tablespoon almonds to make 20oz, but you can use more to make a richer consistency. Even adding more, that’s perhaps ~12 almonds per batch/20 oz. With an average of 384 almonds per pound, that would make 640 oz, or 5 gallons. That sounds about right with the slow rate I’ve been going through almonds. Economically, that’s ~$1-1.50 per gallon as opposed to $6-8 for storebought milk. It does take a little more time, especially if you want to add in a straining step too, but money-wise the machine will easily pay for itself if you do use it regularly. My partner makes oatmilk too which froths better, and oats are way more economical than almonds.
