Can anyone find any legitimate reviews of this or the other coolers? After googling around, it seems like there are a number of Chillwell “reviews,” but they have almost the exact same wording. I scrolled down on the websites and sure enough most of them say “sponsored content.” Even though I’m throwing in a South Park GIF, I really am interested if these things work (and don’t breed mildew/mold as they seem to be evaporative coolers)

We have one. It’s weak sauce. It cools things a little in the immediate vicinity but certainly not the whole room. You basically freeze the insert and then it blows air over it. It is also loud. Don’t bother.

They are pitching to people who don’t understand how these work. The thing you freeze has almost no thermal mass, so it warms up almost immediately. If the area to be cooled has too much humidity, it won’t be cooled. This is the downfall of evaporative coolers…

I have one that is 4 to 5 times larger from the mothership. A fan such as the Taotronics ones from Woot or the Pelonis DC motor ones from Amazon work far FAR better and are quieter. Even filled with ice, the one I have does not cool as well as a 16 inch fan. Yes you pay more but they work and you do not regret.

These things are a farce. They are fans that blow over ice or a soaked wick, and nothing more. If you’re in a room where it’s hot and humid, you’ll get no relief whatsoever.
Marketing BS.
Next up, Woot will be resurrecting Pet Rocks. At least those were humorous.

I have a small one for my parents house. They do not have ac in the room i sleep in. So i use one of these right by my head to keep me cooled off enough to get me to sleep. It works pretty well to keep me cooled off, but in no way does it keep the room cooled off.

Will not work with high humidity like summer in the deep South. May work in dry desert heat, but a fan blowing over a bowl of ice works better.

How about these little gems. From the inventors of As Seen on TV.

Friend has one. Sorry, had one.

It would work maybe if you are trying to cool a closet. So if you sleep in a closet then it may be of use to you.

Otherwise not worth it.

It’s a waste of money. These should be illegal to sell! The description is extremely deceiving. These products are small boxes with a fan and filter. And a box on top you’ve to add cold water, or to feel a very brief effect, some additional ice cubes to :-1:! Even on the highest fan setting it’s just a useless piece of garbage. DON’T make the mistake to fall for the AC b.s., there’s NOTHING inside this small boxed in fan that resembles anything close to an AC! It might blow cool but usually warm air on you, if you sit right in front of it.
You’re better off spending the money on any kind of fan!!!

Love the comparison :joy::joy::joy:

The way these things usually work is with something called a peltier thermocouple. When you apply voltage, on side gets hot while the other side gets cold. The amount of cooling depends on how large the peltier is, how many peltiers are used, the size of the heat sink, the size and capacity of the fan(s), etc… but, even at their best performance, these things are not freezing cold. The amount of cold coming off them is always going to be relative to the surrounding air.

tl:dr; they’re not what they are made out to be.

Problem is that these do not even have a peltier junction. They have a reservoir with too small a surface area to cause convection cooling of the surface. The current through the windings and friction of the rotor probably heat the air as much as it causes any movement of a minimal amount of air to cause local cooling by convection. If you took one apart in your shop, you would find it ridiculous. You could create a far better one using a box fan, bath towel and a turkey roasting tray. It would look really “ghetto” but would actually have eight times the surface area and likely work better.

Yeah… I went back and read the description again after I typed that and thought that that might be the case. I’ve got something similar here that some amazon seller sent me to review and it’s supposed to be this great and wonderful AC type cooler. It’s a small fan with an aquarium pump sitting in some water with an ice pack. I swear I think the air is cooler without the pump turned on. Not to mention that here in the South, every tool I own is already rusted from humidity. The last thing I need to do is put MORE moisture in the air!

What ever happened to “truth in advertising” laws?

Those things? More like “as seen on the back of every comic book”!

From before As Seen On TV. I figure the comic book people parlayed to television.

I purchased one on a whim. I was so disappointed by the box that I never opened it. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
