Costa Del Sol - 5 Pack

Looks to be a reasonable daily drinker for folks who did shoot their wads earlier in the woot-off.

I just posted about this one last night on the board.

Here is what I thought about it.

I opened my first bottle tonight, and I am not 100% sold on it. I paired it with standard spaghetti and tomato sauce, but tasted it before eating anything. Everyone says it is good with food, but this particular bottle I can’t imagine drinking without food, since we almost need something extra spicy to balance out some of the bitterness. Very “hot?” out of the bottle, and an almost bitter/metallic/sour taste on the tongue.

After reading through the reviews again, perhaps I got one that was corked.

My husband thinks I’m crazy for buying 10 bottles of it untasted. We are going to wait a week or so before we open up another bottle.

I am hoping that the next bottle will be better.

By the way, this bottle sat open for about 20 minutes before drinking. I tasted a small amount in the glass directly from the bottle, and my mouth puckered up. Then it was poured through a vinturi into a decanter where it sat for another 20 mins before being poured back through the vinturi into the glass for drinking.

Anyone else taste any bitterness in theirs?

Also apparently woot changes the word n o o b to colonist.

A bit late for this question, but when something like this comes up again, I’d like to be prepared: When gifting, is it possible to purchase two (or three) and have them sent to different addresses? Say, if I wished to purchase two and have one sent as a gift and keep one for myself.

Let’s see if it’s true: noob

Told you! And when you reply the text in the text box for the quote shows n o o b… but then on the board it says colonist!
NOOB!

I’m impressed by the number of repeat buyers. In for 1.

Cool, I’m running out of wine since I stocked up a few years ago here. Thanks for the reviews.

edit: nevermind!

How does this compare to something like Noceto Nutz!?
[/quote]

I think you will find the Costa del Sol is a bit smoother and richer because of the blending components (61% SG, 29% Mer, 10% Zin) than Noceto Nutz!. Nice balanced acid and firm structure from the zin + sangio, with merlot’s typical suppleness. Enjoy!

You sold me by pointing out this fact.

I felt the exact same way. Especially with the holidays here, it is always nice to be able to break out a tasty, relatively inexpensive wine for guests. Thanks as always to everyone who contributed their opinions.

I agree, this is pretty mediocre wine and not even that much of a bargain. Perhaps wine is cheaper in New York than most places, but you can get nice imported wine from tempranillo grapes from the Rioja region of Spain for 12 bucks a bottle. Of course domestic is even cheaper and Chilean wine is about equal to domestic. I can’t understand how this is a good deal. I’m not a snob, especially when it comes to wine, but this is definitely not quality wine. Wine is overpriced in general in this country, as that same rioja wine in Spain is about 2 euros a bottle, but it must be waaaay over priced outside of New York in order for this to be termed a bargain.

I have tasted NO bitterness whatsover! Ive had a couple of bottles w/o food (while cooking) and find them to be very smooth (not hot at all) and fruity (though a tad bit sweet)…Hope this helps…

+1

I do not agree. I think this wine is great for a $12 bottle… it may also come down what your preference is: new or old world wines. This is defintely new world (fruit forward) and very easy to drink.

  • 1! Great everyday wine for things like pizza and pasta.

Yeah, I assume most on this board will not agree, which is great for woot and especially this winery. I just can’t understand how $12 a bottle for this Cali wine is a deal. I only had one bottle and it wasn’t from woot, but it was honestly nothing memorable. I can get decent bottles of Napa wine for anywhere between 8 and 12 dollars here in NY, but maybe that’s a rare exception or something. My main point is that wine is overpriced (even at $10), especially domestic, considering the sheer amount of wineries we now have in the West.

What’s funny is that if you look at the map, a bunch of people in NY bought this woot. Interesting, to say the least.
