I’ve had some smart avians land atop the hood, peck at the border, dislodging the wood surrounding the screws, and then hulking up and levering the hoods off from the top; I’ve had to resort to having bars soldered in the vent. (Since I had to do it, it was inexact and gives them barely enough space to perch; but they don’t try too long pecking around the metal trying to find softer wood.
I had a bird build a nest and raise a family in a bathroom vent. It stunk so bad but I let it stay until the babies had flown away.
So r/stupiddovenests material?
Granted, they’re not known for quality nests; just that they’d build them wherever they feel like.
This was enough of a nest that it blocked the vent pretty well. I just ran the vent for the month or so it took for them to hatch and get outta there. My brother cleaned it out and put some screen wire behind the vent to prevent it the future. This was two houses ago.
I kept getting birds in my garage.
So I got them a bird house.
I kept getting birds in my garage and they let their in-laws stay in the bird house.
So we tore the garage down.
I moved the bird house over to the fence. Let’s skip over that part where I didn’t know there were babies inside and I had to chase them around the yard to get them back inside.
Built a new garage with a carport.
I keep getting birds in the carport.
I bought pizza owl from Woot and put it in the middle of the carport.
The city of birds appreciated their town founder, Pizza Owl, being memorialized.
I keep hitting my head on Pizza Owl.
The birds are thriving even after I closed the gaps with chicken wire.
Tldr: birds aren’t real. Oh and they have two bird houses now. Plus my carport and sometimes my garage.
Growing up my father had an air conditioner unit that was kept in the window year round. When it finally died & he pulled it out to replace it there were birds nests in the corners between the accordion sliding barriers & the front part of the windowsill. To this day every window unit gets homemade walls (cardboard & duct tape) to prevent birds from nesting there.
Hard to explain, but the pic below helps a bit.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone else do this & my neighbors must wonder why we do.
Minimalist nesting.
Tres chic.
