Description says “no optical drive” but both pictures show a cd/dvd tray??
Stock photos. Best to expect of not receiving an optical drive.
(Note that I am not staff. I just volunteer to help out on the forums.)
Did I miss where it says “no optical drive” in the description? I did click on the specs and it says Optical Drive: None, but this may be an error I am thinking? Seems like removing the optical drive from this particular unit would be silly based on the design but you never know.
My experience having bought these (not from Woot) for work tells me that there are two variants, one with a blank panel and one with the cutout for the drive. When you order BTO from Dell you can specify drive or no drive and if you choose no drive you get a blank panel that is otherwise the same. We buy refurbs for work and the places we get them from don’t use stock photos, they use actual photos of the device in question, so we know for sure what we are getting.
I’m not saying don’t buy from Woot, this is actually a decent price for what you get. Just that, as @Narfcake said, don’t expect a drive but if you get one you can be pleasantly surprised.
This is a good candidate for a Linux box. I would make it dual boot so I can use Windows (a must have when you use Adobe products).
A good DVD/Writer can be found for $30.
TDP on the processor is 65w. Not a lot room left on the 300w psu for even a mid tier GPU if someone was thinking budget gaming rig. 4060 and 3060 clock in around 120w-170w.
Doable: probably. Comfortable: probably not.
I recommend this blu-ray drive which is at $49.99 which is lower than normal. It can also rip 4K UHD disks if you flash older firmware and many people have if you read reviews and/or google the model…etc…
That makes sense. I definitely think it was worth the OP to point at that in the ad it does state there is no optical drive, but I guess I am being optimistic for those who buy because it didnt explicitly say “no optical drive” and just said there was “None” in specs that perhaps it was an error since the photos do depict one. Definitely a solid value either way, thanks for clarifying that you’ve personally seen a variant that does not include the optical drive.
I’m running an i5-8400 (same 65w) on a unit with a 180w PSU. I use an Nvidia GT1030 and it works great driving a 28" 4K monitor @ 60Hz. It’s not a gaming rig, for sure, but handles my desktop Windows 11 Pro as well as my Plex server feeding 4K DV/HDR media.
I have a problem calling a unit a “workstation” and it’s not sporting a XEON processor, regardless of the power supply. ![]()
As stated above, we use stock photos so make sure you go by the features & specs.
I brought this PC last time it was on woot and it came with a optical drive.
I’ve bought two of this guys bigger, older brothers: a Precision Tower 5600 in 2016(?) from woot, and a Precision Tower 7920 in 2023 (from another excellent reseller specializing in used servers and workstations.)
I’m not too familiar with the 3-series workstations but according to the documentation here, this one does support a single Xeon hex-core “E” processor and up to 128 GB of DDR4 ECC memory.
Service manual here:
is the wireless card included - the spec mentions 802.11n dongle - the spec guide attached to the comments mentions “The wireless network card is optional and needs to be purchased separately”. Both seem wrong as it seems to have a 802.11ac built-in. Can anyone confirm?
Better option anyway IMHO, you can move it between machines. But I guess not everyone has 12 machines like I do…

That said, I don’t remember the last time I opened any of the optical drives on purpose.
Only when I need somewhere to put my Stanley.
Oh! Woot has you covered. Here’s the new Stanley stand. It’s $2 less, so get a couple.

Why would I put a Stanley in a Yeti?
