Am i missing anything over my 4k Fire Stick?
It independently also acts as an Alexa unit which may be useful if you want that functionality.
Likewise, it has an IR blaster, increaded storage capacity, a faster processor, and support for Ethernet plus additional USB devices.
Aside from that, all other functionality is shared.
I prefer the cube way over the sticks
Hexa core + Quad core seems way faster
over a single Quad core
I guess i should mention I’m only using a 1080P screen. When my house is ready the 75" I’ll buy will be smart. I have a Dot already, so i guess this isn’t anything that will make my life better.
Thanks.
Pretty sure mine has IR too.
the firesticks can control the devices via the hdmi (if those devices support it) they do not have IR . that said the performance of the cube is superior, I have 7 of them, a few on 1080P, the rest on 4K. the Ir is great for the stereo , sound bars, recievers, amps, blueRay, DVD, and more.
I also own firestick 4K’s and they are all back in the box ready to give away.
That is my experience. but each person has their thing.
7 cubes? 4k sticks just sitting in boxes? Lol but why
IR blaster is useful for non-hdmi controllable components and functions.
I have echo unit in every room, 2 in some, but Alexa built into this cube allows me to see my half dozen Wyze cameras on my 80" display instead of squinting at the Echo Shows.
More memory, faster response. I have 3 4K firesticks. 2 are in drawers.
Go ahead. Laugh at me
smart house hobby for 10 years. Pioneers get the arrows, but in my old age, my house takes good care of me.
Well I’m old too, and my place is relatively small, but I thought I could benefit from a few cameras, smart lights/plugs, speakers, streaming device(s)…
(mostly off-topic diatribe follows)
But I’m starting to question how “smart” all this crap is! After spending 2.5 hours in a “support” chat with Verizon yesterday (good lord it was infuriating), they’re sending me a new FiOS router, despite the fact that absolutely nothing learned in troubleshooting the issue was hardware related. So I asked, “isn’t there a way to dump the config of this one (like any switch or router worth a damn) to a text file so I can flash the new one, without having to spend an hour+ configuring the new one”?
Of course not. Why am I bringing all of this up? I don’t know. ![]()
But throughout the whole experience I kept thinking what a nightmare it would be to have to reconfigure every one of these smart devices if I needed to change anything about the WiFi network they are on, like either the name or the password…and then my tired OLD mind got to wondering how little I gained with some smart lights; before: walk into the room, flip the switch; now: walk into the room, tell Alexa or Google to turn on the light; reverse this all for leaving the room; then, get “<bedroom 2> isn’t responding, check the power blah blah blah” before I start cursing at it. Nothing like losing easy control of things when a single device like a router sh*ts the bed.
(every now and again I have to go in and delete my Alexa or Google assistant voice history just because I don’t like to have my irrational anger at inanimate devices hanging around, but I do like to see how creative I can get with my language
)
Oh…and this thing we’re all talking about? ![]()
Well, the IR control, but especially the ethernet connectivity is what like about it, and may just jump in on this deal.
I have a Fire 4k stick (+ethernet adapter) and the latest Chromecast w/Google TV. Neither has enough storage or power, but the Fire w/ethernet blows away the Chromecast which is WiFi-only. And they’re both about 4ft away from the WiFi router. It’s just not prone to any blips or interference on the channel, etc.
But performance aside, I’m starting to eyeball a Roku device, mostly because I’m a cranky old fart who’s never really satisfied with this world.
PSA: Amazon fall hardware event on September 28.
If they’re discounting these devices, there might be new hardware in a week.
Don’t forget Prime 2.0 in a few weeks. This is going to be a pass for me. I dont even like Alexa. I think a $50 sound bar and the Dot moved to my bathroom would suit me better.
I’m a Roku fan myself but I don’t care much about controlling my life by having to talk to my hardware except to search for a movie on my Plex server. But without getting into detail, it’s clear I care NOTING about talking to my devices if I don’t have to. The wife and I do talk to each other instead, I was on the fence about one of these till I read us vs them in this link. and I have had a firestick. It was ok but never got Kodi to work right so I retired it.
I know people with Alexa, smart wall plugs, and other creepy things that are just sitting there, waiting for you to say something to it, like a pet or something. If all you want to do is stream a movie, watch some tv and don’t want to invest in a pile of devices that listen to you or wait for it… Roku. But if you have a smart home, don’t mind if someone accidentally listens to every thing you say and do in your home, this cube is for you.
Still feeling a little burned from a previous purchase - thinking a better model refurb (FireTV 4K Ultra Super Whopper Killer HD) would be an upgrade from my Firestick.
I suppose buyer beware: do all the research on the years/generations & subtext etc. And don’t take what apps are showing in the image-descriptions or packaging for granted- as just inane marketing material.

We like our Fire TV cube, using it for 4k tv and works well. We Firesticks also, and I’ll admit I was underwhelmed in the difference between the two. Not really a knock on the Cube, as we already liked our Firesticks, but I was hoping for more speed and smoothness in menus and in output. In addition, Cube does a good job controlling our soundbar, adding Alexa voice commands.
I will mention neither the Cube or the Sticks do quite as good a job at live sports on our 75" TV as our Nvidia Shield Pro. The AI in that smoothes out the movement. For about every thing else the Cube is basically equal to the Shield, and has built in Alexa.
Bananas_Plantains. One shouldn’t compare the two. Its obvious they both stream however one is built on ads the other technology.
I have had many of these. This is the first generation cube. You will experience lag in the interface…the 2nd generation cube is much faster. Amz has the 2nd gen cube for 70 dollars occasionally…def worth the wait imo
Can this make toast? Asking for a friend
What gen fire cube is this?
Love my fire cubes. It’s great to use my voice to operate my TV. If it gets fussy as Alexa can at times I can grab the remote. Great for bedrooms no trying to find a remote in the dark just say Alexa turn off the TV.
