Are these the ones Google just bricked or does that come later for these?
Same question, and even if these haven’t already been bricked, it seems somewhat telling that they are bricking them at all…these are likely next.
I’m pretty sure I read that it’s just Gen 1 and 2 that are losing app access
Retired nest thermostats will still work as regular thermostats, but they do lose their smart functions – no app access, routines, etc. I wouldn’t know when that might happen for this version.
End of support for Nest Learning Thermostats (1st & 2nd gen)
Crap. I’ve got 3rd gens. The clock is ticking. (To avoid confusion, 3rd gens are NOT EOL, but it’s only a matter of time)
Thanks, Google. I’ve already almost completely extricated myself from the “don’t be evil” ecosystem, anyway.
Having been released in 2015, despite claims to the contrary, the Gen 3 versions likely are next. How soon? Who knows exactly, but it’s inevitable since Gen 4 already exists.
Planned obsolescence. I just searched for custom ROMs and it looks like someone is already working on it.
Yeah so much for saving the planet now we’ve got more E-Waste.
All in all, it’s just another brick on the wall.
- Control Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen or earlier) and Nest Thermostat E with the Home app after you [migrate your Nest Account to a Google Account]
- The Nest app also offers full control and settings for the Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen or earlier), and Nest Thermostat E.
Add Wemo plugs to the pile of e-waste.
