Good review and it looks like in the picture that the main issue of external straps was solved. The write up complained of a single set of daisy chain loops down the middle. The pic here shows 2 sets of chains spaces on either side. Cool.

Please note- generally, higher quality backpacks are gender fitted- yes, a woman can carry a man’s pack and vice versa, but it’s less comfortable than it should be. That’s not to deter you from Jansport, as they have quality packs and an excellent repair policy.

It looks like the 55 is capacity in liters; the video is for a 75, but the design looks the same.

And a nice article on choosing a backpack.

The reviewer stated (complained), “After loading my two-person tent and synthetic 15 degree F (-9 C) sleeping bag in the main compartment, there was not much room left for my clothing and food. I was barely able to fit everything for my three day trip.”

Why would you not strap the tent and sleeping bag outside the pack so you could get to them easily? That’s not very logical.

That review is a joke, or the reviewer is someone with very little backpacking experience.

Will this fit in the overhead on a plane?

If you read on, he says this: “In short, it is very difficult to secure anything large to the outside of the pack.”

I don’t have any knowledge of this pack, but I’ve got a JanSport bookbag/daypack that has been following me around for - oh crap, has it really been that long? - 25 years. It is still in good shape and it has not been babied. JanSport has excellent customer service and they stand behind their products. It has been back for service twice, once for a zipper that gave out and once for a seem that split. Shipping takes a while, but the pack comes back ready for more.

Okay, so this pack cant be bashed for a camper’s lack of planning. Do the math beforehand. At best a $400, 2 person tent will pack down to a cylinder about 7in. in diameter and 20in. long, which converts to about 15 liters (sorry wonky units, but we measure tents in inches but still use SI for pack sizes) and a $500 15F mummy bag packs to 11 liters. So even with exceptional gear, you’d still fill half the pack.

That doesn’t include a sleeping mat or anything else. Most recreational campers have a tent and a sleeping bag that take up 20 liters each, so of course they will almost fill a 55 liter pack. Make sure you know how much stuff you need to take before you pick your pack.

As for the inevitable question on carry-on size…

Short answer is no.

Long answer:

Limitation:
45 linear inches
or
22in. x 12in. x 9in.

This pack:
50 linear inches
or
28in. x 12in. x 10in.

You might be able to squeeze it into the overhead with a underpacked bag. Carry on at your own risk.

Are there any women’s fit backpacks on sale?

Unfortunately, not in Jansport. If you click into the Kelty “Woot Plus” event on Sport.woot, you will find a women’s Redstart 23 though.

I did, and it was too small and very ‘girly’. I need a real backpack, just like the boys, ya know?

The Kelty Coyote 80 is a S/M sized backpack, so that might work.

Check out “bad lands” packs. Spendy but worth every penny. Got repair policy too.

“Still use SI for pack sizes”? you mean we still measure tents in inches? we’re the wonky ones.
