Contemplating replacing some damaged siding. Looks like this would be great for estimating but anyone have experience using this to measure for cuts?

Laser devices measure by bouncing the laser against something. When you’re cutting siding, you measure across the face of the material. So no - this would not work well as a measuring device for cutting. Just get a good Fatmax tape for that job.

Is this a real laser tape measure or one with a laser point but takes measurements ultrasonically like the one home depot had. :frowning:

Been wanting to get a laser measuring device but haven’t noticed a good one for under $50 - those all seem to be crap.

Trusty good old Stanley tape measure works great in the meantime.

But I suppose a realtor or a contractor estimating jobs would find these indispensable.

I use one of these professionally for measuring existing buildings inside and out. Be very careful around buildings with reflective surfaces like windows or even high gloss paint. This technology will never be as reliable as a tape measure. I often double-check its readings regularly.

I don’t know one contractor who uses them and they’ve been available for a while. I guess it’s okay to use for estimating the cost of a job…it’s quick, it’s easy and you can always add a 2 to 3% fudge factor to cover your behind. But to make cuts based on the “not so accurate” results you get from a laser measurer equals and results in a not so accurate job.

This is a pretty decent price for a true laser type device.

I have a Fluke 50M unit that I use for quoting CAT5/6 and Conduit runs for installing Surveillance Camera systems - it works very well.

May pick up this one as a spare or just an extra for my install techs. Price is right.

Oh, this looks like a fun toy. Too bad we don’t need it now.

I would love to find one of these in my Christmas in July stocking. I like to go “draining” - exploring underground drain systems - and this would be great for measuring distances between bends. (Though some drains get really humid and foggy… bet that doesn’t play well with laser ranging!)

I guess I’m not alone, since it sold out! See you underground.

I can finally measure my junk.
