I’ve owned a Kelty Redwing 50L for quite a few years now and it’s a solid backpack. The supports and extras can be removed so it can be used as a carry-on and can be strapped down easily. Lots of storage options too! I would buy one again if I needed to!
Read a comment on the Kelty site that the waist strap is useless unless one is below a 36 inch waist. Can anyone verify this? I really like the 44 or 50 for travel.

I have the 50L that I use as my climbing pack. It carries a 60m rope, a full rack of cams and nuts, a couple dozen draws, and at least a day of supplies with room to spare.
I have a relatively small waist and hip (5’8" Asian dude), about 30", and had to crank down the M/L waist belt to minimal to get it ride comfortably on my hips and even then I feel like I should have sized down whenever my pack is squishy. I would be shocked if it couldn’t handle 36"+ waist. Worry less about the waist and make sure it will ride your hips. Spec says M/L hipbelt goes to 52". I can measure mine tomorrow and report back.
I’ve put some miles on my Kelty Redwing 50. Redwoods, Iraq, Afghanistan travels, running and the rockies. Highly recommend, I have the s/m and am 150 lbs, 30-32" waist.
I backpacked through Europe for a month a few years ago with the black 50L bag. It worked perfectly and not a single thing on it broke. Tons of storage and low-profile enough to not make you look like a hunchback.
Well my question on the 44 still stands…I can see with heavy clothes or jacket, plus any belt accessories, that the waist strap needs to accommodate at least 40 inches for me…I reached out to Kelty for an answer on expandability

Do any of these packs have a place at the bottom of the back for putting your sleeping bag. I couldn’t tell for sure from the images.

If you go to the Kelty site, the next size up – the Red Cloud – has a separate bottom compartment. Comment on the Redwing 50 L was that you can use the straps on the bottom for gear, or stow a compressible bag in the bottom portion of the main compartment

There’s a couple of MOLLE-ish straps on the bottom of my 50L.
It’s an OK backpack but I hate their “LightBeam ™” and the size isn’t quite right for what I need so I replaced it with yukon odyssey 45+10. It’s ~$10 cheaper, too, if you look around.
Edit: actually, for half as much compared to M/L 50 here.
PPS. my waist is 32 levi’s/34 actual and when I tighten up the belt to fit, the ends are hanging all the way down to my knees.
Here is a decent video review of the bag. I purchased a couple of Kelty bags here on WOOT and I’ve been happy with them. Seriously tempted to purchase the S/M 50L for my 12 year old Boy Scout.

Don’t use your age as an excuse. I’m 59 and I’d have no trouble with this. And (maybe like you) I only see the insides of gyms on commercials.

You stay up nights thinking of ways to be nasty? I mean really, we go from valid question to personal attack? I can’t understand that
