If 2018 sounds like only a couple years ago, remember, it’s almost 8 years old…

The batteries in these will be cooked.

I’d disagree. I have a Paperwhite Gen 7(?) that still works wonderfully, including the battery. This isn’t a phone with that frequent of a charge-discharge cycle

yeah, I have a 2015 Paperwhite and battery seems fine. I’m sure it isn’t what it was when new but I don’t need to charge it after every reading session or anything.

I’ve got an OG gen 4 Kindle with a still working battery that my kids use on trips. They’re really hardy devices.

I finally replaced the battery in a well used Kindle Touch purchased new in 2011 back in May of this year. It has since been back in regular use and still humming along…

A $12 investment for a new battery that even included the tools.
