After a significant number of older Kindle devices have been orphaned out, made useless, why would anyone gamble on an older/used/refurb that could be next on the kill list?

I just got a new Paperwhite signature for a few dollars more by trading in my old Kindle for twenty percent off the new price plus the trade in credit.
