Lenovo T460s 14" Ultrabook 8GB RAM 256GB

Processor is a little older but this is a decent deal for a laptop. edit: With this not supporting Windows 11, this is now essentially a “Chromebook” with an End of Life date of October 14th, 2025.

Full 1080p screen, 8 GB RAM, and a 256 GB SSD.

NOTE: NOT WINDOWS 11 COMPATABLE

Is Windows 11 something special? Why is everyone so worried about it?

Will this play WoW classic?

As viriiman commented, Windows 10 support ends completely (including no more security updates at all) in October 2025 which gives this computer a bit less than four years of useful, safe computing using the current Windows 10. Windows 11 is the replacement if you want to stay with Microsoft, but it requires much newer CPUs than many of these Woot deals have. However, unlike many Chromebooks, it should be pretty easy to install a Linux distro and run probably many more years beyond 2025.

As for WoW classic - I’m not sure what the requirements are. The graphics on this laptop are handled entirely by the CPU so that might be the bottleneck as long as WoW will run on Windows 10. (And if you go the Linux route, there are options for trying to get Windows games running on Linux - WoW was popular enough there’s probably a solution for it.)

As someone who was a Lenovo dealer for many years and refurbishes ThinkPads for family members, I can tell you that these are extremely durable, business class notebooks. They are very high quality, will last a long time, and did I mention that they’re extremely durable (Milspec)? As mentioned, if you stick with Windows they will no longer get security updates in about 4 years. But frankly less than $90 a year for a quality durable laptop with a reasonably decent processor that will handle most people’s needs is pretty darn good. And when you’re buying laptops that are over 4 years old, I recommend replacing at least every 4 years anyway. This will run all of your websites, all of your facebook, and a some older games. Buy this for the computer that you use to do the bills, surf the Internet, watch streaming television, work in a business, and do school work.

FWIW, Windows 11 can fresh install on Skylake-based computers (which this is) if you do so from a bootable USB flash drive. It just won’t do it via the update-in-place method.

(Note that I am not staff. I just volunteer to help out on the forums.)

A key aspect of future reuse is upgradability – and Chromebooks tend be less so with regards to RAM and storage, as they’re often soldered in place. Although the T460s also has soldered RAM, it does have one user replaceable/upgradable slot and the storage is a standard M.2 2280.

Can I download it free?

Yes. The article has the link to Microsoft’s page.

If you are patient and keep searching ebay, you can pick up a T480 for about this same price that will run Windows 11 and is probably the last great laptop of the Thinkpad T series. It has USB-c charging and you can dock with a USB-c docking station. The T460s is a great machine (I had a T450s for years, that I finally retired in favor of a used T480), but I think the T480 is enough of an improvement to look out for a deal on it.
