It sounds like this is MX55EC3? I could only get this part number from BestBuy, can’t find any info about each individual router in the set.

Anyone knows the specs of each unit in the set?

It’s listed as AX5300, and never as MX, so, it’s UNCLEAR if Making sure you're not a bot! is the same or not, because that page lists a completely different 3-pack SKU than what’s here.

AX or MX they seem to use those letters interchangeably in their routers. In documentation from Linksys the model numbers begin with MX but the product sets themselves are labeled with AX. I’m sure its because it uses the 802.11 AX wifi standard. So any spec list whether from Amazon, Bestbuy, etc. will be accurate for MX5300 or AX5300. I have 4 of these MX5300’s and they work well in my configuration.

The pictures and specs on OpenWrt show 5 GigE and a USB-A, but the pics on BestBuy for this, show 4 GigE and NO USB, so, I don’t think AX and MX are interchangeable at all. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to have more than one router with the same WiFi 6 spec, since they’d have identical AX ratings otherwise.

These are the MX5500: Making sure you're not a bot! based on the Qualcomm IPQ5018 chipset.

Dear woot, it’s super important to know what the specific model number is when purchasing routers.

Can someone in the warehouse go take a photo of the model code on the box or even better the sticker on the bottom of one of these units?

The vendor sent this photo from their warehouse. It does seem like MX55EC3 and AX5300 are the same. We’ll make that more clear in the offer.

Thank you so much for obtaining the photo! Was always curious how these look refurbished, but didn’t actually want to pull the trigger just to take a look!

So, the photo says MX55EC3-RM2, the discontinued BestBuy listing above was MX55EC3, and the photos for those devices, show 4 GigE port WITHOUT a USB port, which is clearly DIFFERENT from MX5300 on OpenWrt, which has 5x GigE (4+1) and a 1x USB3.

Basically, for anyone trying to make sense of any of this:

  • AX5300 is a speed rating based on Wi-Fi 6 standard; if two different devices follow the same standard and have the same antenna setup (to oversimplify), then the AX number is exactly the same, even if devices have different ports and different chipset/CPU/RAM/ROM/GigE/USB/software/drivers, even if such changes mean that real-life performance would be different;
  • MX5300 device has 4-core CPU, 1024MB RAM, 5x GigE, 1x USB3;
  • MX5500 device has 2-core CPU; 512MB RAM, 4x GigE, 0x USB;
  • MX4300 (LN1301) had 4-core CPU; 2048MB RAM; 4x GigE, 1x USB3;
  • MX55EC3 is presumed to be a BestBuy SKU for 3x MX5500;
  • MX55EC3-RM2 is Linksys Certified Refurbished;

Looks like both MX5300 and MX5500 may be supported by OpenWrt, but clearly MX5500 is a huge downgrade.

Personally, it may be a fair price, but if you want OpenWrt, it’s not the best deal by any measure:

  • Lack of USB is a huge blow.
  • I think there was some talk that 512MB RAM may also be too low for the required wireless driver from OpenWrt for some of these QualcommAX devices to work properly.

These AX5300 are MX5500, this is NOT MX5300!

  • Yes, 55 is worse than 53;
  • Yes, AX is NOT the same as MX;
  • No USB port;

Thank you both, for the photo and for the writeup. Looks like this isn’t a model I want, since I’m mostly looking for good specs for OpenWRT support, but I may buy more MX4300’s (LN1301) if woot gets their hands on some more.

It would be really nice assuming woot has best practice guidelines if more router listings included such a photo with the real model number in future. You can see how confusing it can be otherwise.

MX4300 aka LN1301 is probably gone for good. They keep getting one or two every few months (literally one or two items for the entire sale!), but probably unlikely to ever return again in bulk like before, as it’s discontinued.
