Mystery Laptop (Scratch & Dent)

I kind of agree here. I have several 5 to 9 yr old laptops myself that are fine running Win10 or Linux Mint. Good for students that don’t need all the bells and whistles.

Definitely no modern gaming with these.

Are you serious? If you need some help with a return, there are resources. They’re in the bathroom crying right now, but CS really does respond. But sometimes things happen like people send too many emails before CS has time to respond so they could get marked as duplicates, Woot mails go directly to the spam folders, different email addresses on woot vs prime accounts, emails to CS from the wrong accounts… nothing is perfect. And then there’s Woot. But still, don’t give up.

(Please Note: I’m not employed by Woot, but I volunteer to help in the forums.)

So I am looking for a cheep laptop that I can use as a “file server” for the laser marker, 3d printer, and embroidery machine we have in our house. I need something to be able to carry around to the 3 different units, plug in and download the files via USB cable and run the simple software that came with them. These laptops sounds like they would do that and a little more, so I may buy one as long as my wife agrees. There are still uses for old laptops like this, as long as you don’t plan on using them for gaming or something else that requires a powerful CPU/GPU this should be fine for a lot of things.

A little too much risk for me… if they were around $89 I might be more tempted to go for it. I like keeping an older laptop or two around for various purposes. It’s nice to have one with a good old-fashioned Ethernet port (which are quickly disappearing from newer ones) to plug directly into a troublesome network device with a crossover cable so you can manually configure it.

A little 13" laptop would be kinda cool for traveling since you could pack it almost anywhere, but I really hate 1366x768… on any size screen. And the chances are too high that I’d end up with that for me to risk it. And I really don’t need any more 14"/15.6" laptops… I’ve got probably 8 or 10 in the server room that nobody around here wants. So I guess I can really just use one of those if I need an old laptop for something.

To increase the odds (or at least get a better understanding what is in the pool), wait until the last hour, and see what’s in:

Eliminate all the Apples.
Eliminate all the Chromebooks.
Eliminate all the ones with less than 8GB RAM.
Eliminate all the ones that can’t have their RAM upgraded to 32GB. (This is a key point!)
Eliminate all the ones with less than 13" Screens.
Eliminate all the ones that don’t have a Webcam.
Eliminate all the ones that have less than a 256GB SSD.
By now, most of the CPUs older than an Intel Gen 6 should’ve been eliminated as well.

You will now most likely end up with some type of Business Laptop with coffee stains and scratches related to being carelessly lugged around in an overfilled backpack.

Every single brand has hits and misses. And some even have entire generations of models that are less desirable. But there are few guarantees about the brand that you’ll receive here. With expectations kept in check, this could be a reasonable deal for folks who want an older, but still functional machine at a discount.

There is no question that newer ARM MacBook products have their appeal, but then we’re comparing the just-off-lease Tesla to a much older Chevy Sonic. Not fair for the price, underlying architecture, or use case being compared. And even then, there are a few things that ARM doesn’t do quite perfectly in handling all legacy software, or any sort of upgradability.

I am admittedly not a full stack software dev, so kudos to your son. But I have been working in IT and software development for many years now, so take this for what it’s worth
Also, I currently own a recent HP refurb that I got right here on Woot this last year, and it’s great.

Honestly I sent the link off to a friend of mine just so he would stop sending me links for 10 year old true trash laptops that he comes across on ebay asking if they’re a good deal. One of these would be good enough for him

Agreed. I have enough that are maxed out on W10, not buying anymore. And “most” supporting W11 isn’t good enough; I’d lose that random drawing.

You’d also be forced to signing into a Microsoft account at some point. If not to setup the PC to get it out of “S” mode >.< I really dislike the way Microsoft did that with windows 11.

Will this, at a minimum, run the sims 4.

Do you really think that your friend understands what Woot! is & doesn’t bail when it asks them for thier Amazon login information? Hell, I still don’t understand what Woot! is & when I try to turn friends onto it & show them things that I have bought for hundreds of dollars less than it was on Amazon & that it was even delivered in an Amazon box. They inevitably ask the what’s & why’s would Amazon be involved in such shenanigans & I inevitably don’t have an answer or explanation. And forget about if I try to tell them about the BOC’s. That even furthers the possibility of them trusting the legitimacy of giving/using their Amazon account information to login to the deals.:crazy_face::man_shrugging:t3:
