NETGEAR Orbi Home Mesh WiFi System

NETGEAR Orbi Home Mesh WiFi System

Hmm…current Prime Day deal for two satellite units, not just 1 for $199. Not refub. https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Orbi-Whole-Home-System/dp/B07CQDHPFT

I bought these last time. (I wish I had waited and gotten the prime day deal linked above … a much better deal than the one here.)

Overall, the system works well. It’s lightning fast and it’s nice having one wi-fi network I can connect to from anywhere on my property. We used to have four different access points. If you were in one of the upstairs bedrooms far away from the router, you didn’t get a usable signal without switching to a closer access point. Now my wireless works everywhere.

My top three complaints:

  1. I bought two sets thinking that I could turn the extra router into an additional satellite. You cannot. And this is stupid. You can make it into a completely separate network on bridge mode (and that’s probably what I will wind up doing). But you can’t just have all four of them on one network. And if you’re going to have separate networks, then what’s the point of paying all of this money? You don’t need a mesh system if you’re going to have separate wi-fi networks. (I’m probably going to stick my extra router out in the shed/workbench area and use it as an access point. But it would be nice to make it part of the same network.)

  2. My desktop computer is hooked into the cat-5 connections on one of the satellites. It periodically will lose its internet connectivity and have it restored after maybe 30 seconds. I am pretty sure that this is something on Orbi’s side and not with my cable modem because nothing is losing wi-fi connections - only the wired connection to the computer. (And I’ve had streaming TV on when it happens and the streaming TV has not been interrupted.) Orbi’s logs say that it re-issued DHCP addresses to all of the devices. But I don’t know if that is the cause of the problem or just another symptom. I don’t know what it is that’s causing it, but my log is filled with these entries (.9 and .10 are the only two wired devices hooked up to Orbi):

[DHCP IP: 10.0.0.10] to MAC address 44:00:49:46:95:80, Tuesday, July 16, 2019 02:37:11

  1. I wish there was a better firewall. They let you setup port forwarding, but they won’t let you block IPs or whitelist valid IPs. I would love to be able to RDP home from work, but I don’t want to open it up from the whole internet - I just want to open up my work IP.

This is AC3000 while the Prime Deal mentioned is AC2200…just wanted to point out the difference in case it mattered to someone.

That’s the AC2200. Woot’s is the AC3000. Woot’s is faster at 3.0Gbps while Amazon one is only 2.2Gbps.

And of course the price goes up on the mother ship…

277 now.

were you able to connect the satellite from the second set to the first router? This is cheaper than buying just another satellite so I am hoping so. Guess I’ll have a spare router in the event the first one dies!

@subman84, yes. I have two satellites connected to one router. They don’t know/care which router they originally shipped with. When you set it up, you have to pair the satellite(s) to the router - they aren’t factory paired out of the box or anything.
