Great price!
This is tempting… does anyone have any knowledge about what will happen when initially charging or recharging one of these after it has been sitting unused for 4 years?
Also, Comments on Amazon lead me to believe the battery in this model dies after about two years of use. Can anyone confirm?
I bought one. Battery was DOA, had to send to Apple for battery replacement. These are old stock that have been sitting for too long w/o charge. It doesn’t have Apple warranty either. Will cost $99.
Item description specifically refers to an Apple 1 yr warranty. I think if the battery health falls below 80% within the warranty period it’s covered 100% by the warranty (check Apple site).
In my experience battery health will start to degrade after 2 yrs constant use. I’ve found by rotating two watches that I halt the decline dramatically. I’ve had a S6 and S9 and the batteries have not “died” in only 2 yrs. @cdmcgowan
One would hope that for twice the investment “dramatically” would mean at least twice the life… Please check back after 4 years to confirm that both batteries are still going strong.
Well, 1 year later both show the same battery health. Good enough for me.
My last S6 was something still like 88% battery health after 3 yrs of constant wear.
So your strategy to avoid a 2y cliff is to evaluate progress after 1y… That’s a ringing endorsement if I ever saw one!
Edit: You edited your post to include the second line after I posted this response.
3 years of constant wear, or 3 years of 50% wear on the S6?
I can’t imagine what someone does to completely deplete battery health in only 2 yrs but if that’s truly the case then having a couple in rotation isn’t a bad idea, or investment.
3 yrs constant wear is 100%.
I’m just offering my experience. If you want to argue, go to Reddit.
How many watches do you wear at a time? How do you get 3y of 100% wear time on one watch, and then have a pair of watches that you are rotating?
I’m not arguing, I’m just trying to understand what you’re saying… because it doesn’t make a lot of sense without context that only you have.
I had a S6 that was my only Apple Watch for 3 yrs. Traded it in for a S9. 2 yrs later added a Certified Refurb S8. Rotate the S8 and S9 daily.
I bought one of these the last time they popped up for sale, and be wary as YMMV.
I received my watch, and it was new sealed in box. After plugging it in and trying about anything and everything (10 different chargers, freezer for a little bit), never did get it to accept any sort of charge.
I was able to call Apples customer support and provide them with a PDF of my receipt, and received an apple care warranty, as they reset the “date of purchase” to the date of purchase from Woot. When I mentioned Woot, the representative just said “Oh yeah thats like amazon right?”.
Once the Applecare was active, opened a ticket and sent it in for repair (knowing it’d just be replaced). 2 weeks later I had an apple certified series 7 refurb.
Was it worth the headache? Maybe, but it was definitely a gamble (and boy do I like a good deal and a gamble). One thing worth noting at least is since the warranty was active, I was able to put AppleCare+ on the watch.
Highly recommend trying to get the Apple representative to update date of purchase to when you purchased from Woot. If they don’t want to help the first time, try calling again for a different rep.
Not to contest your experience but the last two new or certified refurb watches i bought needed to be on the charger for at least an hour or two before i could power on and activate.
Yeah with these brand new ones, they’ve sat in the box for years completely dead. Just plain toast.
Left it on the charger for 24+ hours, and kinda knew what I was getting myself into with this one.
Yeah, with NOS stuff, “roll D20 for success/damage.” As long as you have warranty or a reasonable customer return policy from the vendor (which Woot does), you’re not risking throwing away money IMHO.
I ordered this and just arrived today at 11:00am.
I already read the comments in the forum so I had an idea to expect that the battery might be dead and that it would need some time on a charger before it would turn on.
I opened the box and plugged it on the charger at 11:20am and it would cycle through a power on attempt, show the white apple logo that would then fade to a yellow apple logo before going completely black screen. This would occur on repeat every 5x minutes which I assumed just meant that it was taking charge, and that it was low battery and needed time. I left it on the charger and went to work for the day.
I just got home 20 minutes ago and the same problem from earlier when i placed it on the charger has been occurring.
i swapped the usb from a usb c power prick to a portable anker battery that displays the Live Wattage, Amps, and volts of the device that it is charging. As you can see the anker portable battery is outputting 1.5Watts, at 5.3V 0.3Amps, but the battery hasn’t been used in so long that it is having a hard time taking a charge. The output remains constant and isn’t dropping every few seconds etc delineating that it isn’t a problem with with the usb cord, usb power brick, the usb charger etc.
I’ve tried to force reset it by holding the crown and the sidebutton + other stuff but it remains in this loop. I’ll keep it plugged in for a while and see what happens.
But it has since been 6x hours on the charger and most likely will take longer.
6x Hours Later from my previous comment And It Is still charging with No End In Sight.
Or just go to Amazon and buy a refurbished one for $162.99. Cheaper and no hassle.
