8th-gen CPU makes this 4-5 year old tech. Cut that price in half and maybe it’s worth it.

Not sure about half. It’s new (full one year warranty) and has good specs and is a convertible, but price does seem high.

I wish these notebook manufacturers would settle on one charger interface already.

The Intel Core i5-8365U is a power efficient quad-core SoC for notebooks and Ultrabooks based on the Whiskey Lake generation and was announced in April, 2019 as part of two vPro capable CPUs of the WHL-U series.

It’s meant for mainstream users

The new laptops mid tier and up generally have a Display/power USB C port that can be used for charging. If you have a good cable and a charger that is 65 watt or more- then you can charge as quickly through this port as will charge through the adapter port. This computer has USB 3.2 Gen 1 (Supports DisplayPort and Power Delivery)- so it’s all set to charge through that USB port. My daughter has an Acer Spin3 , my son an Acer swift 3 (both of these were like $400-$500 and they both charge fine using the USB charging. It’s a great universal charging option that’s becoming more popular.

My first impulse when looking at this was … “over priced!”

BUT considering the amount of RAM, size of the SSD and a decent if slightly older processor PLUS the fact that it is NEW and comes with a 1 year warranty, this is probably a solid buy. One of the biggest dangers with many of the refurbed comps on the internet is you don’t know who’s refurbing them and what the battery life is like. Those are two factors you won’t have to worry about with this machine.

I’ve purchased this refurb for my daughter off Ebay- recertified by Acer (and comes from them) and has 2 year warranty. It has a better processor, but only 8GB ram and 256GB SSD. For most purposes that a lightweight 2 in 1 will be used the 8GB ram and 256GB is plenty. It’s a well price well balanced machine comes with a bag and has a stylus built in. This comes with windows 10 but can be updated to windows 11- which in my mind is better for those who aren’t ready to update yet. It also has a type c port with thunderbolt (supports display and charging) $520Acer Spin 3 - 14" Touchscreen Laptop i5-1035G1 1GHz 8GB 256GB SSD Win 10 Home

The “old” CPU is intentional. That CPU is probably one of the most efficient available. With 16GB of RAM and a 500GB SSD this isn’t a bad deal for a new 2-1 Notebook. I wouldn’t personally buy it, but I totally understand its value.

Most of the refurbs I’ve gotten from Woot seem like they are new, believe it or not. Only one over the years did I get one that wasn’t pristine. And I think that was a scratch and dent offering, so that may explain it. But other than that one I’ve gotten some very good laptops.

This one has the old style round plug for charging.

It has both the standard charging port and also USB 3.2 Gen 1 (Supports DisplayPort and Power Delivery). You can buy a charge like this for the USB C port 65W USB C Power Adapter, Type C Power PD Wall Fast Charger

I’ve had a couple Acer’s in my life… They fall apart pretty quickly. Especially the refurbs. For another hundred and change, I’d go with the NEW Dell.

I still have a Dell that uses Windows XP and it works perfectly after 15+ years.

The Acer’s I bought in the past (Win10) fell apart in a short amount of time. I’m using an HP now with Win 11. The OS isnt all that different from 10, but I grew up with computers. Starting with the old DOS OS, floppy disks, and 10MB external hard drives that weighed 8 pounds and crashed every 10 seconds.

I completely disagree. I have had far better luck with Acers vs HP, Dell, Alienware, and Lenovo I work on and update laptops all of the time. Acers offer the best bang for the buck, and are the easiest to update. I have 2 kids and also service other peoples laptops all of the time, the Acers by far have the least amount of issues and are intelligently designed, unlike HP laptops that will give you 16 Gb of Ram , a late generation I7 and pair it with a 1600x900 screen.

There’s a reason corporations choose Dell and HP over the rest. Acer falls apart. Updating has nothing to do with the poor manufacturing. In fact, the updating process is the same for all MS OS’s

Conssitently when asked to recommend a laptop IT pros say Dell. Never say Acer. Sorry. Facts are facts.

Perhaps your facts. Dell and HP are marketing giants- their products are nothing special. All the components are roughly the same. HP and Dell are way overpriced and provide no added benefit.
