It’s facial tracking stuff is cool, but the quest 3 is cheaper and better in almost every useful way.
Impractical tech
The Quest Pro is a unique VR package with what VR HMD that are available for purchase today. If you are already in the Meta ecosystem and have a Q3, there isn’t anything for you in this device. If you are going to mainly use it with your PC for social VR, it is unmatched in all the features it has: wireless connection to the PC (6Ghz recommend), eye/eyebrow tracking, mouth tracking and basic tongue tracking (stick it out, but no waggle). It works with Virtual Desktop and Steam Link. Not only that it is a great pre-Steam Frame device to see the benefits of Foveated streaming/rendering will bring to the performance optimization of VR. BUT it is discontinued as Meta has already walked away from it, the factory pads are known to not be very comfortable for more than an hour for most folks and it is a sensitive wittle device as you have to be careful about getting sweat past the lenses. I’m buying this as a backup as insurance as my current Quest Pro is two years old and still working great but this price is the same as the used market for one of these devices. Get them while you can!
How desperate are you to give all your info to Meta? This or the Q3 is such crappy tech anyway.
What a horrible deal. These were $499.99 from Meta when they discontinued them:
This is like buying it from a scalper which I guess is what Woot has become.
The $499 is for the Quest 3. The Quest Pro had gotten a reduction while it was sold, but it was to $999
From the article:
I would not recommend this at all. It doesn’t have a depth sensor because they were being cheap (and maybe because you can see through clothing). I would wait until it’s like $200 or something… or invest in a Quest 3.
Or if you hate Meta, you could wait for the Steam Frame VR headset to come out; it might not be cheap, but what Valve has done for it is pretty amazing in my opinion. Google up all the Steam Frame news if interested.
Look ma, no soul!
Using the Pro controllers with the Q3 makes the experience so much better for certain game genres. I had to switch back to a Q3 controller for a day because I forgot to charge the Pro controller and it was another planet experience in a bad way.
Now that the controllers are no longer available as a separate purchase (at least in the U.S. store), this may be the last chance that enthusiasts of the Pro or those that rely on the controllers for use with the Q3 will have a chance to get a backup set. If it was $500 and new in box, I’d be tempted to buy and try to unload the headset only. There are QPro groups out there for whom the face and eye tracking are important. But at this price, it’s too risky.
This is really worth no more than $199. Quest 3s is much cheap and much better overall.
