My experience with the Noco Boost X (similar, but a little more power). I got mine for Christmas and have used it twice already.
My son gets a ride home from school: “Dad, the car wouldn’t start.” He has jumper cables and has used them once before, but I grab my keys and my little booster and tell him “Lets go.” Back at school, he pops the hood, I plug the clamps into the booster, connect to the battery terminals and turn it on. I tell him to give it a try and… his 2009 2.5S Altima cranks up like it has a new battery (I did have him try it without the booster so I could hear what it was doing, as well as connecting my volt meter to it- the volts dropped to about 5 when trying to crank). I was impressed with how easy it was.
This past weekend I changed the oil in my 1993 300ZX Twin Turbo, which has been sitting for nearly 2 months. I like to just crank it and let the starter do the work to build oil pressure after sitting for a while before actually starting the engine. But the battery was dead. I hooked up my charger but realized it would take a while so I thought- I’m going to test that battery booster again. I pulled the fuel pump fuse and hooked up the booster. I cranked that motor for probably a good 10 seconds straight, and it was cranking like it had a fully charged battery. Got oil pressure, put the fuse back and cranked the motor- it fired right up. After this test it still showed 50%.
From my research, Noco is one of if not the top brand for these boosters. If you have 12volt batteries that tend to drain, this is a convenient thing to have. Brother in law said he has to use his on a riding mower that has a drain on the battery that kills it if it sits for 2 weeks or more.
Plus, it has USB connections to power other devices like a battery bank. The LED lights can flash or stay solid. Good option to have if you travel and worry about a dead battery. Also, if you have a bad battery and get a jump from someone, I tell people to get somewhere safe or where they can get the battery replaced because once they turn the car off it may not start again without another jump. But with this thing, you could jump your car a few times if you needed to.
Pros and cons to this particular model. Pros this is a top brand that uses quality battery cells that can take a beating to repeatedly jump start engines. It is quality and in my experience outlast the competitors. The cons for this particular model is the charging port that uses the micro usb port that is notorious for wearing out or breaking internal pins. No fault of the device but more so the usb charging standard at the time of design. Just be sure to take care when charging and don’t abuse it beat up the connection while plugged in and it should last the life of 300 or so cycles. The other con I have found with this model is slight discharging when left to sit uncharged. After a couple months I went back to use the pack and it was 50% charged. However it still started the 4cyl generator without an issue at 50%.
Just be mindful of the somewhat delicate charging port and charge the device every quarter to 6 months, being sure not to leave it on charge 24x7.
I prefer to use USB “C” where possible as it seems to withstand more abuse than the predecessors and the added convenience of using the same power supplies for multiple devices. Although the power supplies (and cables for that matter) aren’t all created equal but that’s another topic all on its own.
Conclusion: Solid product but use caution with charging connection.
