Pro Edge Elite Electric Knife Sharpener

This Woot reminded me that I need a knife sharpener, but I ended up buying a Chef’s Choice 220 instead, well-reviewed and $20 less (at A**z*n). It alleges to do serrated knives, too.

Now, of course, I feel disloyal and dirty, and I can’t even be confident that I will be able to successfully disembowel myself in shame. I think this is the only time I’ve ever chosen to buy something else once Woot made me realize my need… can I ever find forgiveness? It’s a lot of anguish for just a few lousy dollars.

These are fantastic for people whose knives didn’t cost them an arm and a leg. Got a pair of garden shears? A chef’s knife from Ikea, Wal-Mart et al? These’ll do great with an electric sharpener. If you’ve got higher-end European or Japanese-steel knives (Henckel, Global, Shun, Kasumi, Masumoto, Konosuke et al) I would definitely recommend getting them sharpened from the place you bought them.

Any knife expert will tell you to stay away from these and get them professionally sharpened. In fact, just got my sharpened by a local knife shop and they are sharper than they were originally! If you just have some basic kitchen knives that you dont have any attachment to, then this would be one of the better alternatives to the “purist” way.

Absolutely right. I would stay away from these if you have high end knives. I have a few high end knives those (Shun) I can send to the manufacture to get sharpened for free and the others I take to the local butcher or grocery store butcher to sharpen for free too. I do hone before every use and slightly after use.

this looks like a re-purposed 5.25" floppy disk holder.

It puts a double bevel 35° (17.5° each side) angle on your knife. Here’s an interesting video comparing 2007’s “best knife sharpener”.

Please note that the video is not of the sharpener machine being wooted today.

My father was a butcher, and I was taught how to sharpen at an early age.
These machines can be used if you are really careful, and you should rarely if ever need the “Coarse Grind” grind side it is only for putting on an initial edge. Every two to three months or longer you will need to re-hone “Fine Grind” your knifes. Unless you are a butcher and you are cutting a couple hundred pounds a day…

I’m in for “ONE”. This fits my lifestyle perfectly. The cutting utensils used in my kitchen are not top of the line and are reasonably priced. (if you read between the lines it means: “WALMART BRAND”).

The main reason I am moving to an electric sharpener is I have a few nicks in some blades. Manual sharpening will not remove them. A few passes threw the Electric Knife Sharpener will fix that.

You can’t beat the 3 year warranty that comes with it. Considering the amount of use it will be seeing in my home I would be willing to bet it will last over a decade, easy.

Thank you WOOT.

I probably don’t need this and would rather get the new one that you can adjust the angle with, but I’m sure it’ll be years before that one becomes available on woot at a similar price and I’ve always been curious about these things. I find that a simple honing of my knives makes them nice and sharp and able to go right through tomatoes and other stuff, so my rational mind is telling me this is just a waste of money. However, I just bought one, because I just happen to have some “spare” cash on hand that I got from selling a bunch of old DVDs (got $141!). At least I’ll have something to show for that cash. If I didn’t spend it here, it would probably all just go towards groceries and then the only thing I’d have to show for the money is a bunch of crap - literally. Plus, if one day I decide this was a waste, I’m sure I can easily eBay it.

That statement is so full of win!!!

Hey, to discuss any Home.Woot!Plus offerings- past or present- head on over to my new thread on World of Woot! in the Community section. If anyone else is tired of not having a discussion thread for the Plus items, contribute to this thread. There’s an equivalent one for each other Woot! site. This will prevent us from relying on a motivated user from creating a new discussion thread for each Home.Woot!Plus offer, which makes it difficult to keep any one thread toward the top of the board.

Bought it yesterday and received it this morning! Based on the appearance of the box and the item itself, this is clearly a display model or a return. The box is frayed around the edges, and the seal was broken. The machine itself is just not bright and shiny. However, it also seems clear that it has never been used as there are no visible marks on the wheels and no filings anywhere inside. I doubt it will sit out in our kitchen, and I am mostly interested in its utility, so I won’t return it, but this is the first of the 6-8 items I’ve purchased on Woot that wasn’t clearly brand-spanking-new.

I just received mine today and opened it because I read your post. Guess what? Mine has fingerprints on it and looks used! The original seal had been cut and resealed with another bigger round piece of tape. I didn’t check for shaving or stuff like that but I am somewhat disappointed that their new stuff is used.

What’s going on woot? I didn’t know the new “NEW” was used. :frowning:
