Pro Edge Elite Electric Knife Sharpener

These are good for knives, but not so good for your wit.

This looks like a great item to convince my neighbor or close friend to buy (That way I could borrow it). Just don’t think I’d use it enough to justify owning it.

My stupid knives are always dull and for the life of me I can’t get it sharp even with one of those knife sharpening contraptions and that steel bar. I have not tried one of those knife sharpening blocks yet but I’m hoping I don’t have to and will do better job for me!

I have heard mixed reviews of these. Some people love them, and swear that their knives are always razor sharp. Others have said that they eat away the edge, and destroy the knife. Either way, this is no substitute for HONING your knife every time you use it.

Also, there are many different blade edge angles used. I assume this one is set for standard German blades, not Japanese, yes?

What type of angle will this put on the knives?

I’m looking into that, but I think I see why these are being blown out. Williams-Sonoma is carrying the NEW line, which has the adjustable angle feature: http://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/edgeware-electric-adjustable-sharpener/

This one got pretty stellar comments last year though: edgewareproducts.com

For this price, I’m tempted…

Nice review

manual is here:

From Edgeware site:
The Pro Edge Elite knife sharpener will sharpen knives of alloy, carbon or stainless steel. It is designed to sharpen double- beveled European / American and Asian style straight edge kitchen knives. This sharpener will not sharpen ceramic, serrated or single beveled knives.

I have it on good authority that these are great for sharpening straight razors.

It puts a double bevel 35° (17.5° each side) angle on your knife.

Here’s an interesting video comparing 2007’s “best knife sharpener”:

Keep in mind that the last 2 woot-offs and regular woot, it was $20 more at $79.99.

and my comments then:
Product website doesn’t add much, but you can wander around there:

One person got one to try out, and liked it (got the lead from the product website blog–read into that whatever you want):

gotta go back to work. Bye.

Any knife expert will tell you to stay away from these and get them professionally sharpened. In fact, just got my sharpened by a local knife shop and they are sharper than they were originally! If you just have some basic kitchen knives that you dont have any attachment to, then this would be one of the better alternatives to the “purist” way.

3.5hrs of research later…

If all you want to do is keep your kitchen knives properly sharp on a daily basis (as you should!) and you’re too lazy to do it manually, I think this is a great buy, and all the naysayers crying about it damaging your knives don’t know what they’re whingeing about! I was about to pull the trigger myself, but…

I also want to sharpen my pocket knives, serrated knives, and single bevel knives, etc. This won’t sharpen those. So, I got a Tri-Angle Sharpmaker by Spyderco. They actually got their start making sharpeners before they started making knives. I think their motto is, “First we made things sharp, then we made sharp things.”

Amazon still got my money though! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Q9C4AE/

Put your hard earned money to better use and invest a few more pennies on the Work Sharp Knife and Tool Sharpener. I’ve bought many of these Pro Edge type kitchen counter sharpeners and they all do the same thing the same way. Give you a poor edge that fades fast. The Work Sharp uses a belt system, the same system used by professionals. You wont be disappointing. No, I dont work for the company, LOL, but I love the Work Sharp products!!!

Ja!

Get a couple of diamond honing blocks. lasts a gool lon time. and you will know that you have a good edge. Take a serrated blade and run your fingers from back to front. Many times you will feel a rough edge with this “backwards stroke”. Run the serrated blade backwards over the diamond honing block, or any decent honing surface to remove the roughness. This will really make a difference in cutting.

I don’t have any electric knives that need sharpening. Will this work on everyday manual cutlery?
