$140 on the mothership (edited, this is renewed price).
that’s for a renewed one, nothing in the woot listing indicates it’s anything other than new
Was looking for the manufacturing date on these, but couldn’t find it, not even on the Samsung site? Galaxy Tab A9+, 64GB, Graphite (Wi-Fi) | Samsung US
I usually go by the Android version. This one says Android 13 which is only one major version behind my s24 ultra phone (android 14).
You are correct, I edited my post.
Would you buy this or the mother ship’s 11" kindle?
Description says it’s the international model. Any drawbacks to that if using in the US? I know with some phones, an international model has different functionality.
I’m not sure if you mean the specific dates for each unit… but GSM Arena has the release date for this overall model if that helps. Also lists it as being able to upgrade to Android 14.
Honestly I’m done trying Kindle besides the reading one. They’re slow, websites crash constantly, and I’m not doing anything on it besides searching recipes and accessing PDF and documents from the cloud. I thought it would be nice to have Alexa in the kitchen, but I never use that feature.
I would pick up this over that any time.
Thanks, looks like:
Announced 2023, October 5
Released 2023, October 17
And the Samsung site says Android 14, not 13?
There shouldn’t be any drawbacks for using this tablet in the US. It would be using wi-fi to connect to the internet, not cellular networks.
If I recall correctly, there isn’t a US version for this tablet.
I didn’t know Amazon brand ebook readers came in an 11" version. Or were you meaning one of their Fire tablets (which haven’t been sold as “Kindle” devices for a number of years)? If the latter, buy the Samsung unless you really want a device of considerably lower quality components, no Google apps or ecosystem (which many non-Google apps require for functionality), and a very badly mangled and somewhat crippled UI/OS that is built from Android version NINE(!) and will never get updated to 10, let alone newer.
This Samsung tablet will receive OS updates until 2027, and users should already be able to receive an update to Android 14. Yes, Samsung places its OneUi user interface skin atop it. But it’s not that bad; some people really like it, while some really don’t - but it’s still Android underneath, and one that is still actively supported by the developers of Android (vs. one built on a years-old AOSP release that stopped getting even API updates in February, 2024, leaving the user entirely at the mercy of Amazon for important security patches… which, to be fair, they do provide… usually… eventually).
This Samsung tablet has Dex, which can allow the user to turn it into a “desktop experience” device by connecting a monitor/keyboard/mouse, albeit a less powerful one than an actual recent-generation desktop computer. And its multitasking ability is FAR better than the Amazon tablets’. Want a different launcher? No problem. Or stick with the stock one, but install the Good Lock app from the Samsung Play Store (which is in addition to Google’s - not a replacement of it, unlike with the Fire tablets and the very sparsely populated Amazon store) and customize many, many things while also adding new features.
This tablet is intended to to everything the most expensive tablets running Android can do, just not as quickly. The Fire tablets are intended to cause the user to pay to subscribe to Amazon’s various revenue-generating services, and to buy things from the Amazon storefront. Which are tasks that, ironically, are less annoying to do on the Samsung. And that Amazon virtual keyboard app? YIKES!
Far the sake of completeness: Those who choose to buy an Amazon tablet can choose to download the Fire Toolbox to their Windows or Linux OS computer, and use it to disable (not uninstall) some of the Amazon stuff, to install the missing Google components, and a few other things. And its developer is usually quick to create a new one every time something Amazon does screws things up for the Fire tablet user (he’s up to v37.1, which demonstrates how not rare that screwing up is). But it cannot completely “unmangle” the OS - and it can never upgrade it to something newer than Android 9.
It should almost immediately start pestering the user to allow the download/installation of Android 14 and the OneUI 6.1 UI. Or the user can scroll down towards the bottom of the device settings menu and initiate the process (or make note of the exact model number and download/install it manually from that 3rd party website that has a time repository of pretty much every firmware version of every Samsung device for every region of theb world).
There is some possibility that you would have a fight getting it repaired (by Samsung) unless you sent it to someone in the region it was intended to be sold in, and had them contact Samsung. Or used a 3rd party warranty. At least this has been the case with some non-US market Samsung cell phones in the past. But that shouldn’t be a show-stopper, especially if Woot provides a warranty for the products it sells, and/or the purchaser buys a 3rd party warranty.
Ok, I’ve completed my research. If you’re in it for nice camera and screen, and slightly better processor it’s worth it for the FE bundle for the extra money.
This would be worth it over that one only if it was the 128gb version, which has 8 GB of ram instead of 4, which is truly where the S9 FE outshines the A9+.
If you’re in it for an ok tablet for around the price of the fire HD10, this tablet is better and uses a mainstream version of Android overlaid by Samsung’s oneUI. If you’re used to Samsung then this is a plus IMO.
The international version becomes more of a concern when dealing with cellular models, but support from Samsung is reportedly the same for tablets.
Bang for the buck, go with the S9FE
If you’re like me and want a cheap tablet that doesn’t suck for looking up recipes in the kitchen or browsing the Internet, maybe mobile games, or streaming then the A9+ has got you.
@Angelwing
The version I / woowoowoo911 found found on the mothership is describes as a US Version: (from Amazon page)
" SAMSUNG Galaxy Tab A9+ 10.9” 64GB Android Tablet, Big Screen, Quad Speakers, Upgraded Chipset, Multi Window Display, Slim, Light, Durable Design, US Version, 2023, Graphite (Renewed)’
This is basically what I had concluded, and here’s what I’m cross-posting from the thread on the S9:
“…I didn’t want [the A9] due to the low amount of RAM, which will adversely affect performance. In the end, though, I went with the Lenovo Tab Plus that’s currently at Best Buy for $190, due to a combination of price, speakers, and overall adequacy in everything else, since I almost exclusively want it for media consumption and not gaming or content creation. Also, the built-in kickstand is fantastic.”
I went with the A9+ 128/8 lol. It was on sale for $199
FWIW. Amazon lists the new, US version for $149.95.
