Steiner 8x30 Military Spec Binoculars

FYI smoking deal
This site is like Woot, but for outdoorsy stuff like scopes, tactical, hunting etc. Like here, you have to watch the prices, not always a good deal.

use this link for a member invite
From Dvor’s website: What’s the catch? How much does it cost to be a member?

Nothing. It doesn’t cost you anything. In fact, you can invite your friends and we will give you $10 in store credit!

Just for the record you don’t need a invite to go there and I find it funny the poster discusses “Such a smoking deal!!!1111!” and does not back it up with a price.

Do you know what the reticle measurement / type is?

This is from the manual that comes with each binocular.

Can anyone comment about using Binoculars with individual eye piece focusing with no central focus. Sounds like it would be a pain having to constantly refocus each eye piece.
That is the beauty of the Steiner Porro system. Once you focus each individual eye piece you no longer need to refocus when changing viewing distances like you do with roof prisms.

so this looks like its almost as all the linked deals, but with the “Recticle” ie the notches that help you with distance guestimation..

wonder if its really worth it.. this Amazon.com : Steiner 8X30 Military R Binocular : Air Gun Mounts : Sports & Outdoors vs Amazon.com: Steiner 8x30 Military/Marine Binocular : Electronics $500+ price difference on amazon for just the recticle?

i’ll get this tomorrow morning if someone convinces me

Completely different binoculars. The 280 in the 2nd link is a commercial version of the military binocular in the 1st link. Our military binoculars are made to strict US military specifications whereas the civilian versions are not. These are some seriously rugged binos and the optical quality is superb. This is a ridiculous deal on these binoculars. You won’t be disappointed.

If you are looking for an extremely rugged military grade binocular I’d jump on this immediately. It looks like our military products will once again become restricted from commercial sales very soon.

These are not the binoculars you are looking for. Move along.

The Steiners you want are the real US Navy 7x50. If y’all want to sell me a few pairs of THOSE at this price, please let me know!

Maybe steineroptics can clear up the difference between these:

Please expand your comment. Maybe a link to legislation or a news article would help. I a bit doubtful.

I have read that Export is restricted. Welcome to USA insanity, where everything is illegal if Big Nanny doesn’t say it’s okay…and even in those cases.

There’s not much more to elaborate on. Our military binoculars will soon be restricted. This is not due to legislation. They were restricted prior to June 2012 and they will soon be once again.

The real US Navy 7x50s are what you are looking for? For what?

We make binoculars for every branch of the US armed forces so if you are looking for our US Navy binos then you are correct…these aren’t the ones you are looking for.

Other than the size the 2 linked binos aren’t similar at all. The 7x50 Military R is a mil spec military grade binocular with the M-22 reticle used by the US military. The 7x50 Marine is a commercial grade entry level marine binocular made for the budget minded boater.

Thanks for that detailed explanation, steineroptics. You should really go rent Star Wars, immediately, and watch it.

Perhaps ITAR might explain why optics are restricted: http://pmddtc.state.gov/regulations_laws/documents/official_itar/2012/ITAR_Part_121.pdf

Steineroptics,

If these are such solid and high quality, why only a 2 year warranty, when the #481 has a 30 year warranty, and the #280 has a 10 year warranty?

Usually, the warranty reflects the quality of the product. Why doesn’t Steiner give a 10 or 30 year warranty on this model, they’re all marked “military”.

There is usually an associated markup with a long warranty. Also, I suspect intended use plays a role. The same reason a gas powered lawn tool might have a 2 year warranty for consumers and a 90 day warranty for commercial use.
