TCL A30 Unlocked Smartphone

TCL A30 Unlocked Smartphone

A 2021 phone at a 2019 price using 2017 technology designed around a 2015 core processor (and battery).

That being said, it’s a usable entry-level device. There isn’t a lot of space for big apps (maybe ONE social media app), but it does allow for an expansion card (to store photos or video, not really to install apps). There’s a lot of bulk to hold, so clumsy hands can better grip it. The battery is removable so you can more easily extend the lifespan of the device if you wanted to hand it down (it’s usually the battery that has problems down the line). The processor is easy to root, giving you more control over your software (including the ability to install apps to the expansion card; not recommended).

Similar level phones (same space, processor) but they all have better (non-removable) battery life and fast charging USB C:

IMHO, those two Samsung phones are not truly comparable as they’re carrier locked.

(Note that I am not staff. I just volunteer to help out on the forums.)

I always wonder how “smart” a “smart” device is. Is it “dog that knows many tricks” smart, or “Sherlock’s smarter but lazier old brother Mycroft” smart?
