Check out the 1-star reviews FIRST! Look at the high proportion of them relative to the 5-star ones. 54% are 5-stars, but 35% are 1-star. That’s more than half of the 5-stars.

In depth review of S series panels: TCL S Series/S405 4k 2018 Review (43S405, 49S405, 55S405, 65S405) - RTINGS.com
This television has the LEAST input lag in 1440p @ 60Hz. So if you plan on playing console games on this, I suggest checking 1440p out over 4k since the image quality is very similar to 4k but the increased response time is always welcomed to gamers already suffering high input lag. 12 ms over 15 ms is enough to create a noticeable difference for sensitive gamers, but honestly with console controllers having such high input delay, you may not notice unless you’re using a keyboard/mouse input device on console (ps4/xbox one) both now offer this option for some games and I highly believe this is the future of console gaming in the next few years.
I’ve got 4 of the S series TCL’s. (1) 43", (2) 49" and (1) 55". I recommend them to everyone. They cannot be beat for the price. I have been very happy with mine, no real issues to date.
I purchased a refurbished 55" TCL 4k Roku Smart TV (an older version with no HDR) from Woot about 2.5 years ago. It’s been our primary living room TV ever since and haven’t had an issues. Would recommend.
Is this the same as the series 4?
Essentially. They use to have 4, 5 & 6 series. Now it’s S, 5 & 6.
But the Mother Ship has it for $10 more, and that one’s not a refurb, so…
[Mod Edit: The TV this link takes you to is not the same model and is a 1080 TV. Ours is 4K.]
Those probably weren’t refurbished ones. These have had all their flaws fixed in the refurb process.
It’s pretty well accepted that people with gripes and complaints are far more likely to post than are happy campers. I don’t think that ratios are that helpful.
