I feel like if you live in a more “populated” area Waze will do the same job at a fraction of the price.
I live in a populated area and Waze does not do the same job by any stretch of the imagination. Specially speaking i95 and 309 in the tri-state area all have state troopers who sit on the top of ramps that merge onto the roads and wait for people to fly by and get them with the radars. This is impossible for someone to report to Waze outside of already getting pulled over. This is not a visible spot and generally is where troopers aim to be since they are out of sight.
You gotta be moving 80+ mph to get them to pull you over; but if you’re that type, they will get you eventually.
Waze is only as reliable as the reports. Uniden will detect the trooper running radar from miles away. Huge difference in performance there.
Given their usage of OLED displays, can anyone speak to the propensity for these units to suffer from burn in?
There have been a few reports of burn-in on the OLED screens, but the large majority of Uniden users have no issues (this from hanging out on RDForum for years and personally owning multiple Uniden detectors). Uniden has a dark mode you can select that keeps the screen dark until the detector alerts to radar or laser and the display pops up. Basically the screen lights up during the self test when the detector initially powers up, and then goes dark. There is a very, very tiny dot that scrolls randomly back and forth on the screen to let you know the detector is powered up.
Aren’t these legal in Washington State? Getting this during check out:
“This item cannot be shipped to WA. Please remove this item from your order.”
Radar detectors are legal in Wash. State on non-commercial vehicles, they are illegal in Washington DC. regardless of vehicle. Maybe there’s some mixup on Woot’s end?
Just checked on Amazon and a brand new one is only $20 more.
Yes, a Chinese company called espark has them for $409. May be completely fine to order from them, but be aware the R7s from espark are not sold or shipped through Amazon so you’d need to ask about return policy and if the factory warranty applies. I’m not shilling for anyone, but personally, I’d either do Woot at $389 for the factory renewed, or get a new one on Amazon from East Side which is an authorized dealer or Bestbuy, etc for $425.
I used to own several Cincinnati Microwave Escorts and Passports back in the day. And tried other models subsequently. Things that have lead me to discontinue spending money on them since…

Silly 55 MPH speed limits are mostly gone… we even have some 75 MPH speed limits in our state. That means not getting pulled over at up to 85 MPH unless traffic and conditions do not support it.
-
Unlike the state to our south that likes the letter “O”, our State Police are actually interested in traffic safety rather than ticket revenue. They’re out and visible, not hiding behind bushes… again encouraging safe driving.
-
Driving 80-85 MPH (in 70-75 MPH zones) seems fast enough, especially when the flow of traffic is that way.
-
We certainly have localities who clearly fund their budgets with ticket revenue. After a lot of years driving, you learn where they are and drive accordingly to prevent their game. And we publicize those communities. It is almost amusing - there is one stretch of a local freeway, on the way to the airport, where the traffic flow suddenly drops from 75-80 MPH to 55-60 MPH. Everyone has learned that city attempts to fund its budget with traffic tickets. When you contest tickets, they eagerly write them down to 0-points (“obstructing traffic”) in exchange for $220 “court costs”, the same as the speeding ticket fee. You’re an idiot not to contest tickets with points.

We use Waze and other than the fact that it has been owned by Google for several years, love it. It is far from perfect.
-
If we drove regularly (every month?) in unfamiliar areas, we would very likely be back in the high end radar detector game.
(Don’t get me wrong - we drive very close to the speed limit in residential areas. We drive like our kids live there. People who drive in residential areas at 10+ over the speed limit do not deserve drivers’ licenses.)
My R3 has burn in so bad, you can’t read it in daylight
Yes these are completely legal in WA state and they say they won’t fix it at least for several hours and likely not until Monday (the support team is not even getting a reply from their triage team much less an ETA).
If you live in WA state expect this Woot item to be long gone by the time they resolve this. Too bad for us.
…aaaaaaand it’s gone.
Yeah. No. With the current safety features (which are worlds better than they were 20+ years ago) 80+ is too fast for the “average” person to travel. Remember, you’re on the same highways as the moron that leaves their cart in the middle of the isle. I don’t trust their reaction time one bit.
Hi there. We get this list of things that can’t ship to various states. For some reason, this is on the list to your state. Sorry.
I cannot say the same. For context, here, segments of I-95 remain at 55mph to this day.
