I’d really like to order this, but a 2½
average rating is unbelievably low for Amazon, even for a small sample size of 6 ratings.
Until I checked out the reviews for this item, I wasn’t aware Amazon uses a combination of bad math and fuzzy math to determine their “average” star rating. The bad math: There are 6 total ratings shown. The breakdown chart shows 33% 5​:star: ratings and 50% 1
ratings. There are 5 reviews with written comments, 4 of them are 1​:star: reviews and 1 is a 5​:star: review. If there is a 2nd 5​:star: review with no written comments, that would explain the chart showing 33% of the 6 reviews are 5​:star: reviews. However, 4 reviews of 1​:star: is 67% of 6, not 50%. The fuzzy math: If you click on the average rating shown, you get a pop-up explaining Amazon uses a machine learned model instead of a raw mathematical average. The machine learned model takes into account factors like, the age (date posted) of a review, the number of clicks on helpful, and whether a review is from a verified purchaser. This fuzzy math model brings back flashbscks of an AF training class. Instead of judging challenges to test questions based on the validity of the argument presented, they judged whether or not a test question should be thrown out on whether students who had scored higher on previous tests got it right or wrong.
