Love this cheese! It’s always a hit in our house whenever we serve it for parties–especially our benefit dinners.

Woot used to offer multiple varieties of Vella cheeses or sample packages. I love this Vella Dry Monterey Jack. I wish some of the other varieties were also available. Maybe in time for Thanksgiving or Christmas?

According to their website, a 2 lb. Quarter Wheel Dry Monterey Jack cheese is $30, which is less than the price for this. I realize Woot’s price includes shipping, but it seems as if there should be a little break on the price. Or is shipping – Oh I see. With shipping, it’s $47 from their website, meaning if you want to order from there, you’ll have to make the order bigger to make it reasonable. Woot’s price is a good one.

They do have a ton of cheeses, a lot that are only available near the holidays. I’d definitely enjoy some of those (too, as I’m in for one of these; never had aged Monterey Jack cheese).

From talking to a local cheese maker/dairy about hard cheddars, I think this kind of product just gets sharper with age and doesn’t really have a “consume by” date . . .

But once it’s been opened, you have to be careful not to let it get moldy. Around our house, once it’s been opened, it doesn’t typically last too long. It’s that good.

That’s what the rind is for - it keeps it from molding. Once it’s cut, it can mold - but then, just cut off the mold and it’s fine.

That’s a benefit of solid cheeses versus the ones with holes… those make it really hard to cut off the mold…

MADE IN THE USA of local milk.
ALL NATURAL.
Sustainable practices in family owned and run dairy.

It’s the little things . . .

I wonder where woot gets their $55 list price from.

It’s the product plus an average shipping cost.

Yep.
The last block I bought was from Woot at the end of Nov last year, which means I got it a couple weeks later.
I just now finished the last little bit of it. Which is an anomaly for us, but at one point it had got down to 80 percent or so gone and I forgot it was in the cheese drawer..
Thought we finished it. I trimmed the outside and it was great.
Also - I’n not related to them.

You should have just gone with the woot standard statement that list prices are generally meaningless. If Vella sells this 2 lb wheel for $30 + $16.85 shipping (to Philadelphia, PA suburb), $55 would imply a $25 shipping fee.

Whining over. This cheese is one of my favorites. Reasonably good deal because it is @ $14 less than buying directly from Vella. You would have to buy 4 or more blocks of cheese to get the total costs of a purchase from Vella to only be @ $2 higher per block of cheese than woot deal. Please try to offer more varieties from Vella soon! Pretty please with a promise to worship the text you type.

Soft and semisoft cheeses also tend taste different even after surface mold is trimmed. But they also have a shorter shelf life even if they don’t get moldy.

we have a call into Vella. What I do know is these are “made to order” and when stored properly can last “forever”.

Confirmed.

We bought this cheese at Vella in Sonoma a few years back. We live in Georgia and they told us it could go without refrigeration for 2-3 days when wrapped for travel. We took their advice and it was delicious.

Vella said that the cheese will be good until it’s gone!
