What's a technology that you went "all-in" on that didn't last?
The “internet”.
What a weird fad.
Audio cassettes and the cassette Walkman
All these choices predate me but I chose the latest 3D for the hell of it.
BlackBerry
HD dvd’s i didn’t expect blu ray to become as big as they are
45RPM vinyl singles
I was about to say Windows Phones, but I got 7 years of use out of them for not much $$. My cheapest phone was $10, brand new.
So maybe the BlackBerry Playbook?
Anything from Sharper Image.
Regular, or LTE?
I loved my 3d TV. Still watch an occasional 3d movie on my VR headset. And have been window shopping for a 3d capable projector for a couple years now. I dunno. I love a good gimmick.
Minidisc for me, but Betamax actually had a long life in the audio/visual industry. It was still the standard well into the aughts.
Still have my Betamax and laser disc players. I periodically pull them out and use them. They haven’t failed me yet.
Regular. It was useful for me on several flights, though, as BlackBerry did a lot of promotions at the time and internet access was comped for BB devices.
WordPerfect > WordStar
Reveal codes was great back in the DOS days; less important once everything went WYSIWYG, however.
I like tipping my toes in tech. So I do not really gone all in. Though I have to agree that Windows Phones, portable mp3 players, 3d blurays, or even just plain blurays had a shorter time in mainstream.
Andriod matured quickly, and it had more offerings. Android is like the Starbucks of phones. Iphones are local craft coffee placs. Microsoft tried to compete by putting highend coffee machines in gas stations, where people expect cheap, spoon-melting coffee. Microsoft lost!
Streaming of music and movies really hit fast and strong. It obsoleted lots of independent technology. With 1gb internet, we stream or get dvds from the library. The bluray player is hardly used.
Zune… I still miss it
Also Palm Pre… I miss them too
I feel those had a good run through the 2000s. It wasn’t until smartphones got more affordable in which MP3 players started dropping in popularity.
WP was more efficient than Android, but playing catch-up in a market that was primarily Apple vs Android already was insurmountable, even with the $$$ spent.
