“Wow! You’re a family match to 5 individuals with Active Warrants. We’re legally obligated to notify authorities. This is a friendly reminder that you should expect a visit for inquiries related to the location of them.”

Long winded, lol, but they definitely share the DNA to cops. It also can help identify unknown suspects in crimes where DNA was collected, tho. Including cold cases.

I’m Scottish/Irish 10,000%, don’t need no test to tell me! Nah I actually would be curious to see the percentages and stuff.

You know, if I had relative suspected of crimes found through my DNA, that’s their problem not mine. I don’t get why people worry about this.

I mean I can only speak for myself, I wouldn’t really have a problem with it. I just wouldn’t want my innocent curiosity about my heritage to be something that ended up getting me involved into other stuff, looked into by police, and thrown into other databases. I mean it’s not like the police can’t subpoena and ask for DNA swabs, it’s just that you usually need to be a suspect for them to do that. Its just a privacy thing. If it wasnt so pricey I’d actually be curious to see the percentages and also the cold case solving side of that data sharing is definitely a good thing.

Anyone’s DNA can be vacuumed up when you throw out a used water bottle, kleenex, or curbside garbage can.

FWIW- Mormons have a monopoly on the DNA tests. They are interested in family trees, and they want to baptize dead people into the Mormon religion. So when the dead come back, they will be Mormon.

True dat.

I know the Momons mean well, but my Catholic in-laws might be irritable if their journey into the afterlife is interrupted that way.

Seems morally and ethically wrong to baptize someone without any consent.

I agree. We have seen serial murder crimes solved with this. If one of my ancestors or family members is out raping and killing people and my DNA solves that crime, well, GOOD!

They posthumously baptized Jewish ppl who survived WW2 soooo

Mormons baptized dead Jews !! Many people and families take their religion very seriously. If their families knew, they would probably sue.

Unless it has changed since I did this, the information generated by these tests basically belongs to 23andMe. You do not own your own DNA data. They can and do sell it to anybody.

Per Wikipedia, “Since 23andMe is not a medical provider, the company does not have to abide by standard privacy policies that must be followed at a doctor’s office, such as the [Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act].”

And herein lies one of the real concerns when giving your DNA to companies like this. Not people baptizing your DNA. I’m very curious as well, but pros are far outweighed by the cons when it comes to this. If some agency wants to follow me around and collect my droppings, so be it. I’m not puting my neck on the chopping block voluntarily.

How about insurance companies using your DNA to figure out that you’re predisposed for having cancer, and you are unable to get insurance anywhere because of it?

And that’s why I haven’t used it. I am not voluntarily giving governments, insurance companies, employers, or any organization/company the info to profile, discriminate, deny me services or charge me more.
