(5 Pack) NDG 10ft USB-C Nylon Braided Charging Cables

There was a Google engineer by the name of Benson Leung who would test and review Type-C cables.

He once put a list of recommended cables together on Amazon, and it was interesting for a couple of reasons, to watch the list.

As @WooterOnAScooter noted, the plug is standard. As @Froodyfrog implied, early USB-C cables did not all have the same circuit traces active. That has largely been addressed for simple charging and data transfer. But you may want to check the icons I shared to decipher if the port has the additional capabilities.

  • What differs a lot is wire gauge and current carrying capacity. Too thin (many cables are 28 gauge) means less current and charge rate. If a thin gauge cable is paired with a 3.0 Amp charger, the cable will limit throughput as WooterOnAScooter is saying.
  • I have a few of such thin cables that came with refurbished Woot products and take overnight to charge a tablet. I also have 65 and 100 Watt cables that make a huge difference - as in 35 min for a phone built to take turbo charging. I would still be wary though of not charging too aggressively a hint for which is the battery pack gets warm.
  • If you want safety, I would try to look if the device has a original charger and check the amp rating. Over heating degrades electronics surface mount components faster.

These are also USB-A cables which probably wouldn’t perform as well as double sided USB C. The Samsung USB C cables on here for 3 for $14 isn’t a bad deal for phone chargers. Too heavy powered USB c cables can mess up electronics without the smart chips to protect them. I still have a bunch of the USB A to USB C cables I got here on sale, infinitylabs, they’re solid, haven’t seen em on here in awhile though. Ended up with like 4 of them which is plenty enough for me. USB-A cables are good for compatibility, especially with data transfer on PCs that don’t have a ton of USB c ports. But for double sided USB C I’ve been using some 60W Skullcandy cables I also got here on sale. Now I just need to upgrade to GaN 30w bricks. Currently using some cheap 20w ones that work fine. My phone charges super fast with it

Is that list still around on Amazon or otherwise?

Since these cables are USBA on one end, the computer that is to connect to the phone must have something other than a USB-C port. It needs either a USB-A-3.1 or 3.0 or 2.x (any version USB 2, there are several but for these purposes they are all the same). While all of these ports are power and data, most setups of windows 10 and Android do not default to the PC seeing the phone as an external drive. While Microsoft touts their ā€œPhone Linkā€ app for Windows 10 & Android to be the easiest way to get files from your phone to your PC, it actually can only retrieve picture files from 1 specific folder on your phone, and of course there is no way to transfer anything back.

The very first bullet point basically says NO:

  • High Speed Charging & Sync: USB-A to USB-C 3.0 Cable supports a safe fast charging up to 18W (6V, 3 Amp) and the speed of data sync up to 480Mb/s.
This was the second generation ā€œfast chargeā€ Amperage / Wattage rating that was supposed to get most Androids (if they had the right chips in both the charger and the phone) a full charge in about an hour.

There are now devices that can handle charges of up to just under 5 Amps, but the latest generation of ā€œsuper fast chargingā€ is accomplished by the device and charger ā€œnegotiatingā€ a higher than 5 Volt charge voltage (often 12 Volts) and use a DC-DC converter in the device being charged, so that then a charge current of still at 3 Amps can equal a 36 Watt charge rate (12 V x 3 Amp = 36 Watt) versus the old 6 V x 3 Amp = only 18 Watt.

These are slow changing. I bought two packs and all 10 of them are very slow charging.

Great graphic - thanks!

Same exact experience…3 different brands of the correct size USB - C style chargers and only the short original one that came with the phone will work:(:pensive:
