So what is everyone’s opinion of the quality of iPhone scratch and dent refurbs? In a protective case, will you even notice?

It appears refurbishers have lowered the battery threshold from 85% minimum to 80% minimum. That doesn’t sound good. You’ll likely receive phones with 79% battery performance left; 'tis my guess.

From previous iPhone sales (not this model)

Hey, you there! These items are expected to have a moderate level of wear & tear including (but not limited to) scratches, dents, and dings. Outside of their physical appearance, they have been tested to be in full working condition. Batteries are tested to function at minimum 85% capacity.

I have tried three iPhones from woot, all the same model but different sales.

  1. One arrived OK but below the minimum battery reporting 84% - I didn’t contest this as the cosmetic appaerance and battery run down time was acceptable.
  2. Another arrived with some rather decent gouges and full extent crack above/around the front-facing camera speaker assembly. It reported spot on at 85% battery life left. I contested the crack as the sale detailed scratches, dings and dents, but did not specify cracks.
  3. A third one arrived with a clearly crushed/impressed aluminum bezel about 3mm long and with failed touch input in a band across the lower part of the phone and battery at 84%. I contested the failed touch on this one.

2/3 are serviceable/acceptable and didn’t meet the advertised minimums of the sale.
1/3 has no cosmetic or functional issues but didn’t technically meet the advertised battery minimums.
1/3 is parts-only and should not have been in the sale.

Battery threshold often depends on the grade of the refurbished item. Grade A will often be at 85% whereas S&D will most often be 80%
