I spent a bunch of time trying out consumer grade cameras for my home, and was absolutely disgusted with the lot of them. Lousy resolution, lousy software, incredibly exaggerated night performance. I wound up getting a professional-grade Vivotek. In the grand scheme of things, a few hundred bucks well spent vs. the aggravation.

No. You don’t have to. You may use whatever DNS service you trust to use this camera. You may also use third party IP camera viewer APP on iPhone, iPad and Android devices to view and control this camera. You can auto upload the motion triggered video clips to any your trusted FTP site for cloud backup.

Its “free” with ads, or $25/yr without.
I would rather simply be able to connect up to the camera with truly free PC software or smartphone app (web browser?).

I have a HooToo with virtually the same specs, at least the ones that matter. But even at woot price this is nearly double the cost of comparable, proven cameras. Maybe it’s the SD card feature, not sure though. If you don’t need the SD card you can go to the next step up in picture quality for about the same amount of money.
Have one from COSTCO. Worked for a while but has now stopped. It would “time out” a bunch. We paid the $25 a year for the extra features. Thing is now a paperweight. It will only sync on laptop not on any other devices and only sometimes on the laptop.

These, along with other wifi cameras such as FOSCAM, are nice toys but are not really reliable enough or provide good enough image quality to really work as a security solution. Cheap wifi cameras are plagued by low resolution (640x480 typical, though there are now some 720P units out there) and low FPS (frames per second) - in most cases you are lucky to get 2-7 FPS. A quality outdoor 1080P PTZ (pan tilt zoom) camera can cost anywhere from $3500 to $20k depending on options such as optical zoom, etc… But for some business’ that is a small price to pay for securing your facility.
If you want something quality, look at Axis, SnapAV/Wirepath or Channel Vision. I typically install Wirepath as they have a manufacturers 5 year warranty.

So far, I can’t find anything to indicate that it supports any of these, which means it probably can only be used via web interface or their own propriety program.
Hmm… If web accessible, it might be streamable to a different program via http tunneling.
I installed one of these from Costco several years ago. I think one probably could access the camera directly by setting up port forwarding (and dynamic dns) on your router, but I just used their bundled solution which involved logging in through this https://www.yoics.net service, which was kludgey at best.
I’m having trouble with my camera. I just get green purple horizontal lines on the screen. It worked for the first 5 minutes. Not sure what happened.
Is there any other software I can use to connect directly to the camera? I’m not liking the Yoics one very much.

I had the same issue with mine and got an RMA to replace from Astak. Explain issue on their chat line and they should issue you an RMA after you provide MAC number from camera.
