20 years in live sound and audio. Have had a pair of these for about 5 years. They are hands down the best headphones I’ve ever had.

I bought a pair of these with a straight fixed cable about 3 years ago and they’re the best sounding headphones you can get. With some marketing they’d embarrass everything under the Beats by Dre brand.
These are great headphones. I wouldn’t quite say that they are the best, because they can’t really compare to the HD8xx series from Sennheiser and other similar headphones. But as far as affordable (sub-300) headphones go, these are probably about as good as one may expect. I rotate these with my Denons (AH-D1100) for tighter bass and Sennheisers (HD555) for acoustics. ATH-M50X is a great all-purpose choice.
I’m an uber headphone snob. Dre puts out better Beats on his songs than headphones.

Also with 20+ years of (non-music) audio production. Don’t scrimp on the one thing that lets you accurately hear what you have recorded. You need some kind of reference you can depend on.
Will throw in my two-pence regarding the quality of sound from these headphones. The cables are sturdy as well. AND replaceable if you have cats like I do.
I have no problems driving them from my ipod or laptop. Very good headphone in this price range. You would have to double your spending to upgrade (IMO).
Great sound, incredibly comfortable, convenient detachable cable–for 96% of us, these are the perfect cans, but headphone preference is a really personal thing. Do not fear; if you’re in the 4% who won’t love these, you’ll have no trouble finding someone else to buy 'em.
They need to be “burned in” by playing music in them overnight for a couple nights while you sleep, or a couple days while you’re at work. They also really need amplification to unlock the best sound, so if you’re listening from a phone or tablet, you’ll want a headphone amp (I use a $25 FiiO E6).
Be forewarned: the M50s are a gateway drug to serious headphone addiction. If you’re not careful, you may find yourself looking at expensive D/A converters, reading about customization, etc.
I may be the only person on the planet who owns these headphones and thinks they’re only okay. They’re too hot to wear in most office environments, and the sound is, frankly, canned and a bit bombastic for my taste. My Grado SR60s have a much more open and neutral sound, though they don’t block sound at all. A friend of mine has the AT 30s and they have a much more balanced sound that doesn’t constantly scream LISTEN TO THIS BASS!!!
While sound reproduction shouldn’t be subjective, we all know it is. These are good, but I think they try too hard, and I think the less expensive 30s actually sound better.
Audio Technica ATH-M50X are very competent, articulate headphones. Their construction quality is quite good, too. They are popular in the audiophile community because of their sound quality and their very affordable price. Right now Woot is offering them at an excellent price. Given their overall quality and this hot price the ATH-M50X is well worth considering.
Excellent headphones, they set the standard in this price range. However, you can find deals that are pretty slick for around 99$ if you keep looking. This price is barely under what amazon has them for on a regular basis.

I agree. It is a good price but not great.
This is one of my favorite headphones for tracking acoustic guitars and vocals. I suppose it will be just as impressive for listening through iPhones, etc.
While not terrible, the M40x models are not nearly as great sounding as the 50s. As mentioned before, 50s can be found for the same price (99) if you are patient. If you aren’t, then jump at this woot for sure!
